Just bought a GRRRRREAT silver white 200b matching head and cab. It's got CTS speakers without any issues. 1) what's the wattage rating on these? 2) Is it advisable to upgrade them, or am I being presumptous that since they aren't the JBLs, they aren't good? 3) Any easy/obvious tweaks to these cabs to get the most out of 'em? 4) Impedance on the cab? 5) Advisable to jump the inputs on the head or no? 6) What's the first repair/upgrade I should make after putting on a grounded cable?

Thanks much for your time and expertise, guys. New to the site, but really delighted with what I've found so far and feel like I'm in good company...

Hi! and welcome. The CTS drivers where kustoms base line bass guitar driver, and they sound real good for bass and will also work for guitar or keyboard but if you play guitar and really like that telecaster thru a supereverb brite twang you will have to click on the amps brite switch and you will have that tone but with out it getting spiky or painfull up loud, real good sound.
No one seems to be really sure what wattage these drivers will handle, since its a base line driver, and judging by the size of the drivers voice coil,I tell people that to be safe do not expect it to handle more than 60 to 65 watts RMS.They may very well have been rated by CTS for 75 watts though, but that I would say would be it and on the edge!I think I have come across why some of these CTS 15`s fail for what seems like no reason, heres my findings.
Being a bass driver and what they had to do to get a good stiff bass cone back then, the cone is very heavy, and after 40 years or so with factors involved like how hard they where played and if dry rot is setting, the drivers develope a condition called cone sag, where due to gravity and the wieght of the cone, the cone sags and in turn forces the voice coil to rub on the magnet pole and blow out.So in short if your drivers are still good its worth it to unbolt them ,spin them 180 degrees and hook them back up.I have heard that some live sound companys do this to their 18" drivers once a year if they are in a cabinet that can not be flipped to stand the other way.
As far as better drivers go, yes JBLs, Altecs,EVs and eminence Upscale drivers do sound better way more so for guitar than bass, the greatest improvment is in SPL output per watt of input. Most any of these upscale drivers will double the amps clean head room, and impresive change when you hear it!and to some degree it depends on how much money you have to burn to up grade. The 200`s will work fine at a 4 ohm load, do a search for my posting on amp output test, or findings I forget what I titled it.If you are leaning toward getting better drivers one of the most important things is checking the speakers spec`s to mack sure that it will be happy with the internal cabinet volume,(cubic foot spec)

Hey Steve, thanks a lot for your quick response. I looked through a bunch of your posts on the board (okay, which I guess I should have done before I posted a question which appears to have been asked a million times but...) and found some good information. I have another little 115 cab (by Dr. Bass- lame name, GREAT cab) which I'm pretty sure has an eminence delta driver in it, so I may try putting a couple of those in the cab and see how it sounds. Thanks much for your response, especially re: rotating the speakers, this cab doesn't seem to have any issues (well, except that when I opened it up, I found a half-consumed 'nip' of Glennfiddich-- but that's a plus) but I'm eager to preserve what I can of it.

best,
mvs13

Alot of my cabinets had the back sealed on with what looks like a strip sealer that they use for auto lamp lenses, and the stuff turns most times into a sicky mess and its hard to get off with out some painters automotive wax and grease remover so be carefull and do not work over a carpet you care about.
