Since everyone here has such a collective wealth of information, maybe someone can help me............ I'm planning to build a 2x12 cabinet. I have a couple of Radio Shack speakers that still work and sound great. Problem is, I have no specs on them. They have large round silver sticker on the round magnet. The sticker says "Designed and Manufactured by Radio Shack"; "Made in USA"; "Model No. 40-1275"; and "Polarity +/ -". They are labeled "Musical Instrument Speakers" and are about 20 years old. Before I build the cab, I need to know power (Watts-RMS) and impedance (Ohms). Can anybody help me on this???

Gene, I remember those speakers! If my 2 brain cells are still functioning okay today, I'd say they were 100 watt speakers and were 8 ohms.......

Back in about '75, I installed two 12" R.S. speakers in my K150SC. These speakers are still going strong after what? 27 years? I must have got some good ones..... Reading this post made me curious enough to get out the flashlight and find the numbers on the back of them. It reads: 40-1314A the speaker frame number looks like 3226-? That's been so long ago I don't really remember the particulars, but it does seem like they were advertised as either 85 or 100 watt, they called 'em "guitar amp" speakers. I DO remember they were approx $35 each, because, at the time I bought them, I was in the Navy making about $320 a month, and $70 for speakers was a major expenditure. 'Seems like I stayed on the ship more, and went ashore on liberty less, just to save up for them. ymmv

I forgot to mention that I think mine were advertised as 8 ohm speakers. Looking at the back, I notice that it's wired up to be a 4-ohm total load. I guess that's why this amp has always had PLENTY of volume. I don't ever remember needing to crank it above 1:30 or 2 o'clock, even outdoors.

I have a 3 X 15 charcoal with Radio Shack speakers like you describe. 2 are orange, 1 is black. Further investigation revealed they are actually manufactured by Utah. They sound pretty good but I think 100 watts is optimistic......

Not long ago I had a 100 with 2x12 cabinet that contained Radio Shack speakers....I would say they were not very old. Sounded great on guitar and were not too bad for bass. They broke up a little sooner than the CTS 12s Kustom used.....but they were Killer for guitar! With a guitar they sounded a lot like the square magnet Jensen 12s. Do not overlook these speakers! BC

Thanks for the info, folks. Since I first posted, I managed to borrow an ohm meter. These speakers are indeed 8ohms. As far as power handling, I (and a couple others) seem to remember 50 watts RMS. I sent an-mail to Radio Shack. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they responded a couple of days later. Unfortunately, they don't have info on all of their products going back that far. I see their point. That was in the days before computer. It wouldn't have been practical to maintain hardcopies of everything they ever sold. They were very nice and as helpful as they could be, though.
