Hi. A poping type sound is most likly a transistor or a coulping capacitor breaking down. If you have a oscilloscope, and have done repair down to the component level this should not be to hard to trace out, even with out a schematic. This problem may also be produced by a bad solder joint. You might try tapping on the boards to see if that makes it worse. You may also try going to radio shack and getting a can of component cooler spray and hitting all the transistors and capacitors with the spray. you may get lucky and locate the funky part.If you need a schematic, get your PC board number off of the main board, you may be able to see it with out removing the board from the front panel. Then call Bob monday at 513-761-7757. He can mail you one for 3 bucks. My best guess is one of the meatal case driver transitors on the bottom of the board to the right of the pilot light as you face the back of the amp.

I think I would change the filter caps first. I would double the size at least, I believe the caps are 2500 Mfd at 50 volts and I would replace them with 4700 Mfd or 6300 MFD at 50 Volts. I think the buzz is the key. It is probably 120 Hz hum from a bad power supply cap. And after 30+ years, electolytic caps dry out.

Hi, I beg to differ with the last post. Not that its impossible to have bad power supply caps, but out of the 13 kustoms I have non have bad caps, and my oldest one is a 67.in any case to check the 2 big caps mounted on the chassie, get a volt meter, set it for A/C volts and hook it across each cap one at a time. Polarity does not matter since we are looking for ac. If the caps are good you should see less than4 tents of a volt or .400 volts. make sure you start out with the meter on at least the 50 range and than drop it down to get a better reading. But if your in the mod to upgrade the the larger caps mentioned in the last post will help.
