Howdy,
Have an early '70s 250 bass amp. Cab has two 15" Altec 421A's in it. The Altec's are the original equipment. Using a 1987 Fender MIJ P-Bass Lyte with active pickups. Sounds so-so. How much more can I get out of the amp if I buy an outboard pre-amp, specifically an Aguilar DB 924 which looks so simple I could use it.
What do you Kats think this could add? Looking specifically for more bottom end. Anybody have experience with preamping a Kustom 250 bass rig?
Cheers,

Hi, the top channel has the best low end chunk in the amp. I use mine with a short cord to bridge both channels, this gives alot more tone flexibilty. When I play with my fingers I have the top channel bass control at about one or two oclock, if I play with a pick I can turn it up all the way.The only thing I find I can still use at times is a little more mids from the amp, but I do not think a preamp will by you much. If at the volume level you play at the amp is not distorting, than more seperate preamp added bass will work. If your altecs are 8 ohm models I would check to see that your getting 4 ohms at the cab jack. All and all the best way to get more bass if the preamp still does not do it, is to drag around a second cab.Dont for get these heads where not set up to get driven by hot active pickups, yo will not hurt the amp but you will drive it into clipping sooner. If you want to get tech about it, with any amp if you want more feel and sensivtivity(touch) then in reality you want the tone controls and volumes wide open. ALL, most tone controls do is short your guitar signal to ground, thats why when on a amp if the tone controls are not open, the amp has very little gain. So you see you would want minimal input signal to get the output volume you need to play with. Yes a inline preamp can get you great tone, but for me it looses too much touch and sustain.

I have a pair of 250s with 2x15 cabinets....one has 421A and the other D140 JBLs. I have never had a problem getting bottom out of a 250...usually the guys complain that I have too much. However, a simple test for the amp would be to try an EQ pedal to add a little low end without overdriving the Kustom. I am using non active basses on my 250s.......4001 Ric and a Mexican built Jazz with SD pickups.BC

Hey, take my word on this--your problem is those Altec speakers!!! I like Carvin PS 15 speakers, or anything but Altecs or Peaveys.... They don't call me the low frequency goddess for nothing. A 250 with good speakers will vibrate stuff off your walls, that I know. Deb
