Howdy all, I'm the very proud new owner of a K100-2 (#22819) and 2x12 cab. I had a couple of questions I was hoping for some help with: First was the wattage of the head.
Secondly, the cab came with two non-original speakers and although they sound fine with my mid-'70s Ibanez bass, I'm at a loss for what Ohm or wattage rating I'd need to look for to replace them. There's an old Realistic stereo speaker and also an old Peavey one as well. Any help is appreciated! http://www.leedavila.com/K100.jpg http://www.leedavila.com/peavey.JPG

Hello. K100s are 50 watts RMS, 100 Peak with a minimum impedance of 8 ohms. Buy a digital multimeter and test to see what the speaker impedances are to make sure you aren't running below 8 ohms. If both speakers are 16 ohms each, wired in parallel or 4 ohms each, wired in series, you should be fine. If one is different from the other or if you just don't like how they sound, you'll want to look around for a new set of 16 or 4 ohm speakers. Good luck and nice purchase!

voided3,
Thanks for the info and tips. One follow up then: I picked up a multimeter, but am not sure how to measure the speakers impedences. Any help for me? Thanks again.

Ok, well I've figured out that the meter I have doesn't cut the mustard anyway. With the K100 needing at least 8ohms, is it possible (given the picture of the Peavey speaker and wiring above) that I have two 16 Ohm speakers wired in parallel?

Cheers!

Hello. The setting you'll want to use on your multimeter is 200 ohm setting, or whatever the lowest value is. I've found clipping on alligator clips yeilds more accurate readings too. It looks like your speakers are in parallel, but that's no guarantee that they are 16 ohms.

Cool. I've arranged to borrow one and I'll check it out. Here's another question: is there any danger to the head if I plug in BOTH the high and low input jacks and A/B between them? I ask because I usually play the bass through the high, but it would be cool to be able to switch over, mid-song to the low input for some greatlow end. Thanks again.

Hello. Yes, that is safe, but i don't know why you'd use the high input; I've never liked the tone from them, but the low jack is great. Just kick in the treble knob and you'll have the best of both worlds. AB-ing may give some cool tones though, good luck!

You're right - I fooled with the EQ and the Low input sounds great too. Now I'm wondering how (if it's possible) I could run the K100 head in cascade, using the existing 2x12 cab with another 2x12 or 2x10. Thanks a mignon!

Hello. If your speakers in your current cab are 8 ohms, wire them them in series for 16, then get a second 16 ohm cab. The pair of cabs in parallel will make an 8 ohm load, just right for the K100. Or, i fyou really like the sound, Weber speakers sells an impedance changer for low wattage amps, but it costs the same as a set of new speakers; just thought i'd let you know. Good luck!

Nice looking head and cab. I have one of those charcoals in a 200 series. As you already know you've got the wrong speakers. I would get a couple of four ohm bass speakers (you never know what you might want to run thru it) and then wire them in parallel. That will give you the eight ohm load you seek for max power output.
Four ohm speakers are much easier to find than sixteen ohm. Try to get some with a 50 watt rating each if you can. That will give you some lead way for you run the cab with a more powerful head some day if you should want to.
The reason for the high and low inputs are that some instruments like a electric piano and active guitar pickups have a hotter output with a preamp in them. So the high input is best with them otherwize its distortion city fast. Not a good sound with a electric piano.
But for a standard guitar or bass the output of them is not high so you use the low input. Thats why the whole thing sounds kinda backwards from what it really is and why you see most people using the low inputs.
I have a small mixer with a preamp in it with stereo outputs. I use the high input for the piano as it staves off the distortion. Organ for a B-3 sound needs a bit of distortion so I run it in the high input. It gets that Stevie Winwood sound quick then.
If I play my regular (non active pickup) guitars and basses (which ninety percent are) I use the low input. I hope all of this makes a little more sense to you now.
Good luck and welcome to the Kustom club.

Hello. Quick correction, if you have 4 ohm speakers, you'll want to wire them in series to get 8 ohms , not parallel or you would get 2 ohms. Good luck!

Thanks Gents for all your tips and pointers, though she sounds pretty great right now, I'm sure I'll be referring to your notes when replacing the speakers some time in the near future.
