Hey, I have the opportunity to purchase a vintage 70's Kustom bass cab. I believe it is either the 250 or 500 3x15 cab.(sorry cant remeber off the top of my head) I was wondering if any of you play with the cab BUT do not play with a matching head. And if so what newer heads work well with these cabs?

Sorry if this question is obvious, but this seems to be the place where i would be able to find an answer.

Thanks for your help!

I have both types of cabs, they both will work well with any decent head, but for deep bass responce the 2-15 cab is better, the 3-15 cab is too small for 3-15s to go down as low as the are made to. As such I find for loud bass and with my 5 string the 2-15 is better. Plus unless you have a van or a wagon, moving the 3-15 around is not much fun, but it is impressive once you get it there!

I've tried several bass heads through the years that I've owned my 2x15 cabs (pair of em)..seemed like I always came back to my 200 kustom head..running through the pair of cabs..plenty of everything...it was stronger than a fender bassman, and an ampeg head never really did with those 15s what it does so well with its baffled 8x10 box...if I had to buy a new head today.. I'd recommend checking out the Behringer 3000 bass head..its a small little carpet covered cheapy looker...but actually packs a very solid 300 watts rms..which is about as much as that cab was ever designed to translate...but the Behringer also sports a couple extra preamp knobs that add tons of control to your signal and consequently to how you make the cab work..I used to always use my kustom 200 with a boss bass eq pedal up front..and that's still a hard one to beat..but I do like this berhinger.. I have one and it'll walk my kustom 2x15s all night long...and for half of what a GK or SWR amp would cost you...listen, because i'm in the backline biz, I own a Dave Eden WT800, SWR900, GK1001RB and SVT Ampeg..this isn't about what I can't have...I'm tellin ya..there's nothing shabby about the Behringer..funny though..with 35 years on its old transistors.. I'd still not hesitate to take my 200 kustom out there to work either...

Thanks everyone for your help.

I actually own the berhinger head you mentioned. I currently have it on one of there 4x10 cabs. Only thing i really noticed about the berhinger equipment is that it is very cheaply made. and can be dented/broken easier than other amps. Then again that's why it's so cheap.

when a bassist friend of mine had me over to his studio for a jam session last year I noted how much his tone had improved and looked over to see a Behringer sitting on top of an old PV with the 1x18, 1x12, 1x8 or whatever cab.. I was surprised..he was raving about them, their mixers..etc..anyway...I was on a job one weekend out of town...I had several events going on so my bass rigs were thin and I had no spare amp should something fail...I was killing time at a local music store and he had a good deal on the behringer so I bought one for grins and peace of mine..knowing it would never be a rental rig..but ok as a backup
mind you.. in the first year of rental service which sees no harder use than I personally would give an amp.. my GK1001RB bass head has fried , my Dave Eden WT800 head has fried, and my ampeg SVT has required retubing... I've not been impressed with any of the current pro market offerings.. I swear I used to play 3-5 nights a week in clubs and plenty of touring and never had this kind of trouble out of my old kustoms...yeah..the Behringer just sings "cheap" but so far its been pressed into service as a bass head for local church concerts, has banged around in the truck for at least 20 gigs just riding around as a spare and has served as the power for my pair of 2x15 kustom cabs that do duty as the low end of my wedding band PA...and it has hung in there as well as any of the pro models...mind you, I guess I'm sounding like some big Behringer fan...not really...just seems like a good little amp for the money so I do recommend guy give em a try if they are looking for a good amp on a budget...now back to kustom talk...

Hey Ed, do you work on your SVT yourself, or do you have a tech. Their is some little known info about what Ampeg did intentionaly to a lot of the SVTs that where made in reguard to their speaker jack wiring that will shorten the life of its output tubes that are all ready under a heavy demand running in that amp.

Thank for the tip on the Behringer Voided. I was thinking of making a faux Vox amp with one of those in and old Vox head.

Hi Steve....I have an amp tech that is Fender/Korg/PV/etc certified and I have him do most of the work cause he's just plain better than me...the SVT rigs we use mostly are the new Korg SVTAV anniversary blue silver cosmetic style...I have my guy load pre-matched sets of JJ tubes in there and still he has to dance with the bias a bit to get the little LED lights on the backpanel to play nice...the new sound good though...and the new cabs definitely take the pounding better than the vintage originals...please let me know about your discovery though as I don't want to assume that my guy is aware...
