Hi all! I have a line on a Black tuck and roll K150 in pretty good condition from the mid '60s. I haven't been able to play it yet, but the owner claims that it's in reasonably good condition, though he says it needs a going through and some cleaning - dirty pots, etc. Before I drive 45 miles out to see this amp, what would you think would be a decent price for it?

It's all about color and condition. If it all works that is a bonus, dirty pots are easy, but if it needs parts, that is different. If the Naugahyde is shreded or has Ciggy burns then the price goes WAAAAAAY down and because it is black and 65% of them made were black....that tells you it isn't that rare. What is he asking? Look it over and offer him half.

He's asking $275. It sounds like it is basic working condition that may have some quirks that could be fixed by having a tech look over it. He's also offering a nonworking '70s Defender to sweeten the deal. I had a 100 model years ago with a 2 x 10 cabinet that I really liked, but I don't have all the time in the world to deal with Amp tech and possibilities of a costly repair. I have yet to see pictures of it or actually give it a test drive so we'll see. I'm also considering a new condition Ampeg Jet J-20 for around $400 or so. I play reggae, ska and world music in a band with my Les Paul but also like to play punk music at home for fun with the help of a vintage SD-1 pedal.

275 for the head is to much, the non working defender doesn't make it worth 275 still either. at least not to me. However, when these amps work, they are clean as clean can be and take pedals great. If you could pick them up for 175 for the pair....it would be worth getting them both repaired...and you would be further ahead than buying the ampeg.

I agree if it were only a head version, but I goofed here and didn't explain that it's actually the K150 combo with working speakers. It may not still make it worth it.
I have a 100% working Roland Jazz Chorus now, so maybe I should still with that. I still haven't seen pics, but I guess we'll see.

Is it near Atlanta, GA? I saw a black K150 on Atlanta Craigslist a few weeks ago, and the seller was asking $225, which I thought was pretty reasonable. If it checks out with no major problems, you might offer $200-ish and work up from there.

Is the K150SC a 2x10 or 4x10 speaker configuration. Even the 2x10 model if the amp is working and only dirty controls. I'd personally drive 45 miles to look at it and see first hand the condition and what might any problems. The 275.00 isn't outragious if all it needs is cleaning of the controls. Driving to see the amp lets the seller know you are serious on a purchase, and it's easier to bargain face to face. I've driven a lot farther than that to look at Kustom equipment. I couldn't find an Ampeg Jet J20 on MF but at 400.00 I'd guess it's made overseas. Good luck and let us know if you get more info.

I agree, But now knowing it is a combo and not just a head that makes a difference. If it has the 2 x 12" like you think, You need to go look at condition and take a 9V battery with you and touch the speakers with it and make sure they move and make noise, if not that may be the big problem. I bought mine and the only thing wrong is the speakers were blown.

The Defender it is hard to say on that. if you can get a good deal on them and they are in decent shape, I wouldn't be afraid to pick them up and get them repaired. The K150 is 10 times the amp of anything that you can buy today. You need to go look at them for sure.

Yeah, I've been arguing with myself whether I need it. I don't really want to take my current amp to gigs around town, but it's no more expensive - and certainly
no more rare - than the K150. I'll try to make some time to drive up and see/ hear it soon, and I'll let you know what I find, thanks again for all the input!
