Hey check out auction number 380095477088 for the two 1970 Kustom 2x15 CTS cabinets (or just see the 3 pics below.)
The question is – are they cascade, or are they green?
My vote is definitely cascade (cascade that has faded to be more green) – even though the ebay pictures show they are green, ebay pictures many times misrepresent the true color of the tuck & roll. (Also, I have a blue 2x12 that had faded a little toward blue-green, and I have bought two “blue” Kustoms that would up being cascade when I received them.)
Also, is this true – “Kustom made an emerald green for one year” ?
(Production date of the cabs is approx Nov or Dec 1970.)
In the photo of the jackplate you can see both blue and green flakes – proof that this is cascade.
The following is copied from the ad:
seller: “I THINK THEY WERE MORE BLUE GREEN, BUT WITH AGE I THINK MORE GREEN BLUE ???”
Q: Hi! For those asking - Kustom made an emerald green for one year. These are only the 2nd ones I've seen in that colour. I have a cascade rig, and this is definitely not cascade. I am also a collector of vintage Kustom equipment.
A: Thanks for the info.
Q: Hi, Does the color look more like green? Or is it more like blue-green? If you remove one of the handles, you can see what the original color is.
A: i think blue
Q: The cabinets look like they are a color that has not been seen on vintage Kustom cabinets. They made a color called cascade, which was kind of a teal green, but these look very different than that. Do you know the history of these cabinets, of if they have been recovered? I'm a collector and have been speaking with other collectors, and we all have the same question. thanks!
A: They look more Green than anything, with a Blue mix. I do not see where they have recovered. If i have to i will take loose and look for extra holes. They are from old Detroit stuido down town, very old school.
Q: Hello,I can not tell from the pictures, what color are the cabs?I was wondering,it shows shipping to me about 57.00, would that be each?
A: I WOULD THINK EACH. THANKS

I vote for Cascade. In answer to the question about removing the handles, he answers "I think blue", then later says they look "...more green than anything, with a blue mix". Sounds like discolored Cascade to me. Was Zodiac Naugahyde even available in Green that long ago?

One more thing to think of. Kustom would have been insane to offer a green covering different from the cascade. Most all bands back in the day always matched their Kustom amps. So if a band had silver, they added more silver amps. For kustom to offer the odd green for one year as someone stated, would put every dealer in a tail spin to try and sell the odd color to bands that used already had cascade amps. From a dealer stand point, and the way inventory turned around, a dealer with a cascade K200 head and needed a cab to make a complete amp, orders what he thinks is cascade only to see a green cabinet at his door that is not a match to his cascade head. Kustom would have had every dealer returning the odd green cabs, or would have had Kustom send a matching head cab to make a complete amp for a customer. I don't think the customer would buy a green amp that didn't match the rest of the bands cascades. This from a financial stand point from both Kustom and the dealer would not make good business practice. Kustom was busy enough with 7 colors in all the models they made to inject a odd green to disrupt manufacturing what they already produced.
The cab's on ebay are cascade. I'd bet they spent most of their life in a VFW or Legion Club long before smoke eaters were installed. You can still see traces of the original cascade on the top of one cab, so that area may have been spared by an amp sitting on top.
I was a Kustom dealer in the 60's and 70's and Kustom never sent us any bulletin's on a new green covering. There were only 8 colors ever offered, the orignial 7 and the added Kool Black in the slant face era of Kustom. pleat
