Okay, okay, I'm all for sellers trying to figure out if their potential customer is a nigerian scammer, but this is ridiculous!

I emailed a guy in North Easton about a Kustom 2x15 speaker cabinet. No casters, but I'm sure one of my friends here will help me with that (hint, hint). No pictures on Cl, either, so I sent him an offer of 75$. He accepted.

Next day he asked when I wanted to pick it up, and to give him a call. I replied that since I don't hear well out of my left ear (which is what I use the phone with) and so I replied that I'd be calling through MassRelay. He got pissed, for whatever reason, and so I quickly replied again, saying to give me his address and I'd pick it up tonight. His reply? 'Found your videos on youtube and your science-fiction stories, so I guess you're legit.' I don't think I had this much background check since I was working for Newton north High School in 2005! I'll take the cab, give him his money and hope he doesn't have an axe in his hand. Good grief!!!

Forgive my curiosity, but if you don't hear well in your left ear, why is that the one you use for the phone? What's MassRelay, and what does that have to do with which ear you hear out of?

I use that one because there's a hearing aid in my right ear =)

Also, because his number was a cellular phone, the volume is often very different from a (gasp!) landline, which are seeing dimished use on a regular basis.

MassRelay is a service for the deaf and hard of hearing. If a deaf person wants to call me, I have a television that enables me to use sign language to talk to them. However, if I want to talk to a deaf person, I have to use a relay. Really, I only had to use it because at work there are NO phones... well, because everyone is deaf.

Let me spare a response from someone out there: I CAN hear myself playing guitar. I usually feel the vibrations on the strings, and plugging it into an amp lets me hear them normally. However, playing at satisfying volumes is impossible because there are ancients living upstairs and downstairs and still call it 'that darned rock music!'

Well, despite my intial post, everything went well! The Kustom is a K-200, no casters (help!) and it doesn't have the original handles, but whoever put them on did an incredible job, so they'll stay. I didn't realize the 200s were tapered slightly towards the end.

The guy I bought it from looks like he moves a lot of gear around, so he must have more dealings withthe nigerians than I do, lol. I'm just curious, and out of sheer boredom, does anyone have any horror stories to share? I mean real ones? This was just a case of miscommunication.

(Called the guy with the B4... He's gonna hold it for me!!!!)

Several years ago I responded to an ad in a local trade paper. I say local, the gear was about 100 miles away. It was a Kustom 300 head and two 2x15 + Horn cabinets and a spare 200 series 2x15 cabinet all in black. I called ASAP and was told it was still available. The price was cheap for what was offered so I told the guy if it were in presentable condition I would take it. We agreed to meet in the morning so that I might see what he had. The next day I took off work and drove with cash and Van to see and hopefully add to my collection. When I arrived in town I called......no answer. Drove to the location.....no one at home. Called later......no answer. Made several trips by the place and waited.....nothing. After about 4 hours we went home. Called from home.....no answer. Waited a couple of days and called from a different number. At last an answer! The guy says he left that morning because he decided not to sell them. I asked why he did not call and tell me that before I made the trip. He said he did not want to sell them at that price because they were worth more.(notice that he did not answer my question so I asked again why he did not call before I made the trip and he gave me the same answer) Now that I realized this guy was a nut job I asked how much more did he want. He said 500 dollars more than he had quoted previously. (now his price had gone from reasonable to nutzo insane) My first inclination was to make another trip and attempt to negotiate.....instead, this time, I did not answer and hung up the phone. Story for another day is I once drove from KY to AL to find the two cabinets I wanted and agreed to had increased 400 dollars while I was on the road. I left those there as well. The world is full of all kinds. It is unfortunate that some of these nuts are in possession of Kustoms! BC Rolling Eyes

BC....Boy do I know what you mean...A few months ago I answered a Craigslist ad for a Peavey Guitar amp with 2 12" scorpions for 75.00. I called right as I was leaving work to go get it and said I was "on the way" and that If as advertised I would take it. Told him I'd be about 20 minutes driving time. I got to his house as expected and the jerk had sold it out from under me. I would love to find a couple of 2-15H cabs for my 300 head...The last pair of those I looked at had 2 d130's and covers and were in pristine condition... Same guy I later got my Blue 150 PA set from with stand. Those 2 Cabs went for about 1400 for the pair on Ebay about 4 yrs ago. He had picked it up in Chanute Factory direct. Thankfully most deals seem to go as expected...Shortly after the Peavey I drove 425 mile one way to look at an 8 channel 300 watt Pa with 2 302 columns with covers. When I called I re verified that it had 8 channels. I remember asking if he was certain it had 8 channels. Well it turned out to be a standard 300 PA instead of the 8 channel 600 I thought I was going to see. I already have a 300PA so wasn't interested. Since he claimed to have been playing for 30 years I find it difficult to see how he could "mistake" a 6 channel PA for an 8 channel...
I wanted a 600!!!!!!!! Personally I think he delibrately misled me so he lost a sale...He had several Kustoms in the garage so I think he knew exactly what I was asking for. The trials and tribulations we must face...... Mad Confused Shocked Surprised Sad

Craig.....It isn't all bad though. Once in a while a jewel of a deal comes along. Like the time I went to look at a blue 200 with 2x15 that did not work. When I got there I found it it was a K200A-4 with a 3x15 Altec 418 cabinet. The man said it did not work so I made an offer....he took it...When I got home I plugged it up hoping I could at least get some kind of sound out of it and found only the pilot bulb was burned out...all worked fine. Another time I bought two amps to get one ...when I got home I had an email from a man looking for the amp I did not want. When I sold it, the one I wanted was a sweet deal. I think as the years pass I have learned to protect myself a little better. Congrats on the blue 400 it is a beauty. Also, I am happy you made Chanute...I enjoyed meeting you! BC Cool

Very Happy Have to find some way to feed the T n' R monster... Very Happy Very Happy
