K150-2 AMP AND 4-12-G CABINET [message #10158]

hey, all. i have matte black t&r k150-2 (sn:80439) amp and a gloss black t&r 4-12-g (sn:48985) cabinet, both with original covers. bought them from the original owner in '74. never gigged out with it, still sounds good, particularly through a tele, still looks good, rev/trem footswicth still works, and is all original except for a three-prong cord that i added and one speaker that i had to replace when i bought it. the light behind the power button is out, and so is the light behind the tremelo display on the footswitch, and input#2 on the first channel is hosed. otherwise, everything seems to do what it's supposed to. i'm looking to find it a good home, but i don't want to give it away. any opinions as to it's worth or suggestions for restoration would be appreciated. thanks.

The power switch just need a bulb that gets replaced by pulling the square blue bulb cover off from the switches front.
If you do a search here you can find the post that have covered what the bulb number is.
BEWARE! the plastic these switches are made from get very hard with age and split with little pressure, so when reinstalling the blue lens, go easy!
The foot switch sounds like a LED that is out, and it should be no big deal to fix.
The input jack no working could be two problems.
1) I have seen the non metal portions of them just fall and crumble apart.
2) The little end of the tip contack and switch may not be bending open far enough when a cable end is plugged in to open the switch and unshort that jack so it can pass signal.

thanks for the reply - very helpful. i found this from a review regarding cleaning up the sound on a 150 combo. do you have an opinion on this type of repair?

"... I was getting a lot of static and hiss about a year back and, frankly, the amp didn't sound that great to begin with. I took it into Tim at Songbird in Toronto and he pulled out all the carbon comp resistors as, I guess, they had had too much exposure to moisture. Once he had put in the replacement carbon comp resistors I had a completely different amp..."

I've personally found that replacing the original carbon comp resistors will make a great deal of differnce with the background noise and hiss in the power 200B series amps, but will be an expensive proposition.

The metal front amps have a number of the original carbon comp resistors already replaced with 1% metal film resistors in critical positions, so I believe that the difference will be modest at best.

My 250 metal front head is stock and is generally quieter than my stock 200B series heads. Maybe Steve and some of the others here that have both style heads will comment on the noise issue.

As for your footswitch, there is a small light bulb just like the one that is installed inside the power switch behind the trem label. It screws into a tiny socket inside the pedal housing. If you deciede to fix up the amp, just order some extra bulbs.
