Kustom K2001-A Amp Head [message #3407] Wed, 31 December 2003 14:24 Go to next message

I notice some hum when not playing. Am I right assuming this is the 60 cycle hum they talk about. I also have a Kustom 250 hed which does not hum. I use it live. Just got the K2201-A head. If you have it rewired with a 3 prong standart power cord would this help. Not really a big issue I just use it for practice. Thanks

Flip the on/off switch to the opposite position. That serves as your ground.

It makes no difference which way the switch is turned. Just a real low mellow hum not a hiss. Thanks

Thats the way a bad ground sounds. Maybe you're got one somewhere else.

Considering the A series is a bit older than the B's or the 250's, I might suspect the filter caps might be dying. They do dry out, particularly if the amp has not been used in few years. You may need to have someone scope the power supply or at the very least, check the 2 sides of the power supply and see if the voltage is up to spec. The voltage should be about +/-40 volts on DC and 0 on AC. Bipolar power supplies and push/pull amps, which all Kustoms are, will cancel out power supply hum until the capacitors are really bad. Then you still may or may not hear the hum. Your power will be greatly reduced also as a result. BTW, remote diagnosis is just a shot in the dark. Good luck. Conrad

Thanks for the info. I kind of thought from many years ago the Kustoms had a low 60 cycle hum. I'll check it out. Also wondering I read a post were the 200's had cabs at 8 ohms. Is this true I also use a 250 head and the cab is set up at 4 ohms with 2 x 15 Eminence speakers. Will it be better to wire the cab to 8 ohms. I know the 250 head sounds good either at 4 ohms or 8 ohms. The speakers are 8 ohms each. Thanks

Are those the huge can-shaped things in the middle of the chassis, with the wires coming out of the top? Oh my god, where the samheck do you find replacements for those? Maybe I'll look into swapping those out. Billy S.

They like four ohms for full power output. Thats why two eight ohm cabs sound so great together. Not to mention the awsome looks.

Hi. If you can get your hans on a volt ohm meter, preferibly a digital one. Set it for a/c volts, turn on the amp with all the controls down, plug in a speaker cable hold the meter test leads across the other end of the jack. Do not worry you will not get shocked. If the meter reads .050, or less than 1/2 a volt a/c the amp is OK.
