Hello all,
well I got another K50-2 this one has alot of hiss like my other one did, and I know its Q1, on the K50-2 Q1 is a 2N5033 it crossed to a nte326 witch did get rid of the hiss but im getting distortion not alot but the sound is not clean. does anyone else have any suggestions on a replacement for a 2n5033 ??
thank you

Hi, are sure about that original part number? since a nte326 is a Jfet. I have never seen the schematic for a K50, but most kustoms use a 2n3904 in the first gain stage.

Yes, Im looking at the original schematic and its a Jfet.. i also have been looking at the other kustom plexiface amps and none of the others have a Jfet as Q1 ??
I wonder? has anyone EVER heard of a Quiet K50-2.... could this Jfet in the 1st stage of the preamp be a design flaw?
any comments would be helpful
thanks

I have never had a k50 to listen to at idle so I can not say what may be too high a level of gain hiss.I would tend to think that it should not be as hissy as a gain stage that uses a 2n3904.
My first guess would be that if the amp seems to have too much gain, than some of the other componets that set up the jfets gain level have drifted and the fet is amplifing more than it should.
Any of the tantalum type caps would be my first bet, and any of the 1% tight tolerence resistors also.

Heres what I did, I started replaceing resistors going into the 1st transistor in the preamp... and then I said what the hell I want to replace them all every single one of them, and then what I did is replace every single part in the amp, all resistors, all caps, electro, ceramic, tantalum, mylar, so now were Im at is ... believe it or not I have replaced every part in the amp except the transistors, (sometimes I get crazy ideas) actually I did replace the transistors to see if it gets rid of the noise and it didnt. until I replaced Q1 with a nte326.. and most of the noise was gone but I got a slight distortion. so Im looking at the schematic (circuit) and looking at what ive done to this amp and Im thinking ????????? bad amplifier design? so figuired the only thing left to do is try some different JFets and maybe I will find one thats quiet and clean

Could it be aspeaker buzz? I have had some vintage speakers that had a small buzz that you only heard at low volume, and at the tail end of a note.
