I have a Kustom combo cabinet marked only with a 150. It has been used recently by my son to boost an electric piano in his high school pep band, but he brings it to me saying the speakers needs replacing because it is crackling. I came to this sight to get an idea of what speakers I should put in it (brand ??) The one's in it are 12" (2-12's). I was kinda surprised to see some talk of using guitar amps. for bass. He would love to be able to use this to play bass, but never has because of crackle, If I put bass speakers in it will it be alright to play bass guitar through? (excuse my ignorance) Please can anyone tell me if this is possible or if this is out of the question.

I think I am understanding that this is an SC combo (check the literature section) and that the power section is marked 150. I have seen these in 2x10 1x15 and 2x12 configurations. The 2x10 and 2x12 should have rev/trem and were loaded with speakers voiced for guitar use. The 1x15 had the heavier bass speaker. The power section will work fine in any application. If you remove the back the speakers should plug into the head section with a normal 1/4" phone jack. As a test I would suggest removing the plug and connecting the head to an external bass speaker cabinet to see if you get the sound you are looking for. The Kustom power section will work for bass or guitar with the proper speaker(s). BC

The crackling might indicate a blown speaker or two, or a bad solder joint on the circuit board. You can use another speaker to test the integrity of the amp, and use another amp to test the speakers. Once you determine the where the problem is, you can proceed from there. But, to answer your first question, my son uses my 2x12 Jensen equipped K100 for church on Sunday nights. He has no trouble getting the needed sound in that application. I don't think the speakers are the biggest problem in my rig. 60 watts just isn't enough for most loud applications. Heck, 100 isn't enough for rock and or roll. Just make sure the rig is solid and have at it. You really can't damage anything in moderation.

Thanks for the help. I plugged the 150 head into the little 75W Fender Rad Bass amp. he's been using and it sounded real good. When I turned the "reverb" up I could hear the vibrating, but don't hear much difference when I turn the "trem-vibe" up. What is "trem-vibe"?
I guess now I must find new bass speakers. We only have Radio Shack here in Chanute - no more Kustom factory. So does anyone have suggestions on good affordable bass 12" from Radio Shack?

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Radio Shack would not be my first or even last choice for anything more than parts. Check out E-bay or any major speaker manufacturer. Most will have one or more online retail/wholesale outlets. Deb likes Eminence, I like JBL and have had good luck on e-bay. My suggestion would be to use JBL E120-16 speakers. The drawbacks are, they are heavy, about 25# each, expensive, 100$ minimum used, and expensive to recone. On the plus side, 150 watts RMS/300 watts peak and virtually indestructable. Also a good but lighter weight version would be D120 or K120 JBL speakers. They are older and have a smaller magnet structure. The cones are the same. I am sure there are more options out there, but I am not sure if Radio Shack is one. Also, consider reworking the amp with a new baffle board for a 15" speaker. I believe that amp came with 2x10, 2x12 and 1x15 configurations. With that in mind, a JBL E140-8 would be my first choice. If you are straight-up bass player and don't do any popping or high register bass playing, that 15 will be great. The frequency response is 40-2500Hz. Great low end, but would need help with the higher frequencies.

CARVIN also makes a nice bass 12 it's the PS12B, you have to ask for the B version. Eminece also makes some good bass 12's. They are the Eminence DELTA-12B 16 ohm drivers. Parts Express sells them for around $62 each and their part number is 290-415. They handle 300 watts each, voice coil 2 1/2", freq range 55-5,000 Hz. magnet weight 56 ounces. Let me know if you get some.

I went online to Parts Express and found part 290-415 which was an Eminence 12" for $99. If I purchase two of those could I simply remove the speakers that are in the amp. now and put these in. I see the one's in it are soldered in. Do these go in the same? As you can see I am a moron when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for the help.

usually yes...... I made a home made phase checker though and use it to make sure they are wired correctly for phase. You want the cones to move outward when a positive voltage from a battery is applied to the wires. Email me at debraehart@hotmail.com if that statement confuses you.

Hi,
On single speakers, it really doesn't matter. Even on matched speakers, as long as you wire them correctly, parallel; red to red to red, black to black to black. Series; red to red on first speaker, black on first speaker to red on second speaker, black on second speaker to black. The only time there may be a problem is if you wire different brand speakers in the same enclosure, not recommended or the same speakers in an enclosure but 2 enclosures with the second enclosure being a different brand. JBL's work opposite to most other brands.

Yup, Jbl's are backwards.... that's why I use a polarity checker. Never mix brands in the same cab either, they sound weird!
