Hi, I wanted to see how many of you kustom collectors would be interested in meeting Bud Ross this summer? I am part of the early Kustom amp collectors. There are 10 of us who get together as schedules permit. We first met in 2000 in Nashville, again in 2002 in Indy, and again in Nashville last month. Bud was on board for two of the three get togethers. We discussed a summer meeting somewhere around the Chanute area. Kansas City or Chanute is just about center of the USA so it would be great to meet in Chanute, see what is left of the factory and I know there are a lot of former employees that might have some stories to tell. Getting information first hand from Bud is always a treat. I don't get on this site as I should and will try to correct that. I was a kustom dealer in the 60's and 70's. At one time my collection was over 68 pieces of kustoms plus both model organs and a kustom guitar and bass guitar. Between the 10 of us we have lots of photos of our adventures with Bud.

I'm in Don. I am for the Chanute area if possible to locate some of the folks who worked there back in the Day. Maybe Neil or Bud could locate some of them. Another Kustom Jam session should be mandatory! BC Cool

Kool, I know that Tommy is thinking Chanute, and I know we will have enough musicians for a great jam. We just need to drag along a drummer, you know, a drummer that can play a tuck & roll drum set. We just need to get some of people who post on this site all the time to get on board. I know once they meet Bud, the trip will be worth any effort to get there.

JC......#1 Son ....who you know quite well.... plays guitar exclusively now....and I do not know where he will be this summer. #2 Son plays guitar and bass and dabbles with keys.....so nothing here. ET's son is the drummer! Cool BC

Hi all,

I check this site out all the time for updates on kustom
gear. I live in Kansas City and would love to get together
with you all. Just let me know when. I was wondering if anyone
bought that whole Kustom colection that was on e-bay and was
located in nashville.

Have any solid plans been made for this event yet or is it still in the hope it will happen stage?

Has a location been discussed or found yet?

Will Bud Ross be available for Q and A's?

Has anyone considered (video) taping any interviews with Bud Ross for distribution or publication?

If he hasn't started one, someone should get him to write the book. Here's a guy that created a line of musical products that touched so many people's lives. And that doesn't even include the whole radar gun thing.

Yes, we have set the last weekend in June as the date. Chanute,KS is the location, Bud Ross will be there all weekend. We have talked about finding someone who can videotape the events, (still looking for a professional) but I'm sure everyone will want to do their own also.
One of the core group that is getting this together has family living in Chanute and we are getting some info on motels, security, building to dispay our amps and will post the results on this site when it is complete. To date we have 12 collectors onboard and will be hauling as much as we can, so we will have kustoms of every color and size at the reunion. This will be an event that will last forever in our opinion. We like to encourage everyone who posts on this site to make the trip. pleat

The get together sounds like a great time. My dad worked at Kustom in the late 60's and early 70's. I will check with family to see if they have any pictures during that time. I am planning on attending and will bring anything I can locate from that time. Chanute does not have (or did not have) many hotels or motels, so people may want to book early.

I need to start getting an estimate of how many collectors plan on attending. Along with how much equipment is being brought.
I am working on a building to store all the trailors in. For safe storage while we are in town.
I have secured a location for this event that I believe meets all our needs. I am starting discussion with the city of Chanute now.
But, depending on how large or small this convention will be, helps me determine if we have the right place for this.
There are other larger places, but, not with dining and bar.

Please contact or email pleat, Don Thompson if you plan to attend. And, give him some sort of idea how much equipment you will be bring.

Thanks

Chanute Kansas June 27th, 11:00am till Midnight at the Quarry Stone Country Club ballroom.
Most out of town guest are staying at the Super 8 motel.
As of this writing, about 15 collectors are coming, and bringing along some of their kustoms. Bud Ross, his family and their friends will be in attendance. Some of the folks that helped build the original amplifiers and guitars are suppose to attend.
At present, this is a one time event. An oportunity to meet and listen to Bud talk about how these great amps came to be.
I have also been informed that Bud is breaking out some of his own collection for the first time ever. Who knows what all he has.
So, don't miss this oportunity. Might not ever happen again.
Jam session later in the evening. Put on by some of the collectors, on an all vintage kustom stage.

I really REAlly REALLY wanted to attend, but as luck would have it, I aquired a new band or they aquired me, and our first gig is June 27. Maybe another get together in a couple of years might make it easier for all to handle. Good luck and hope to meet all of you in the future.

Hey Conrad!......I understand that "the show must go on" as I have missed many family functions over the years because of my bands. Truth is, there WILL be other gigs and there WILL be other bands and this MAY NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. This response is not for Conrad only but for anyone else who may be on the fence about this event. We have a few guys coming who lost their jobs this year....but they have found a way. We have some with major health issues that are coming because they have found a way. This group of Kustom fans is a close group of folks of rare character that welcome all with the tuck and roll bug and a love for the Kustom sound. We help each other find gear...we trade among ourselves and share a wealth of Kustom knowledge and experience. We have also forged relationships that spill over into everyday life. I am proud to be a part of it. So, quit the band if you have to....cancel a gig or get a replacement....make the spouse mad (she will get over it) eat beans for two months to recover the trip costs. Folks...you DON"T NEED TO MISS THIS! Thank you....I will now step off the box. BC Very Happy

Hey all you Kustom collectors and fan’s of Kustom amps. I missed the Arlington show in 2004 because of a band gig and I have kicked myself every time I think of it. Missing the 2004 show and the time spent with Bud and the collectors was worth more than a month of gigs looking back on it. BC summed it up, yeah the show must go on, thats what I told myself in 04. As it turned out we had a dismal crowd that weekend I played instead of going to the show, and the band bickered all weekend.
Biggest mistake I made to myself was not to go, in favor of playing a gig the band. The band is long since broken up, and all I have are some great photos that were sent to me of 2004 show. Currently I am changing careers, unemployed and I know two other collectors that just lost their jobs of over 30 years, they found a way to go and I did. I know we had 10 collectors that were part of the gang that chipped in and help purchase the Lotztone Amp that was one of the first amps that Bud built. That says a lot of our love for Kustoms and how Bud and his amps changed the world of music and my life.
This will be the biggest and best show that we will all be able to be part of. Maybe not as many amps on display as years past, but with more collectors making the trip, Bud and family spending the weekend with us, Saturday evening jam session with an all Kustom stage, the city of Chanute looking forward to our convention, touring some of the original kustom buildings, talking with the people who actually made your amps. I’m sure we will hear a lot of how and why things were done the way they were.
I urge everyone to be there on the 27th. I don’t think we will every have the chance to do it again in Chanute on such a large scale. Collectors from all over the country are hauling as much as they can to be there.
As Bud told us, “It’s a go for the 27th, we aren’t getting any younger.”
I want to thank Neil for the hours spent working with the City of Chanute to make this happen.

OUCH!!! The bumps on my head are rising. If this wasn't the first and scheduled months ago, I would have to reconsider. But this band will be all Kustom. I will try to post pictures, at least at our web site. Good luck all and have a great time. In 4 years, I will be kicking myself.

Conrad, we're not picking on you, there are some others that have sent emails to us that have passed because of a band gig.
My band also had a gig booked for that weekend and I canceled it. It's not in my nature to turn down gigs. I was just sharing my experience about the 2004 show and hind site that if we ever got to do another convention, I would be there. So far we have 19 people making the show. I'm sure that there will be some swapping of amps and cabinets during the weekend. You know there might be that special red kustom you've been hunting for, and it just might end up coming home with me. As ET always says, Play Loud.

I agree with Pleat.....not picking on Conrad specifically! Twisted Evil Like Pleat I have made them all except 2004 in Texas and it was the result of extremely poor planning on my part...and I very much regret it. We are a close bunch. If we ever get into a bar fight it will look like the brawl scene at the end of "Blazing Saddles" because of the number of participants! Those who have not attended can not grasp the fellowship we experience. Pleat and I had been kicking around the idea of a meet at Chanute for years and now it is finally happening. There are new guys coming to Chanute that I only know from email and I look forward to meeting them and welcoming them to the group. Again...THIS MAY BE A ONE TIME THING!!!!! So, anyone considering the trip needs to make EVERY effort to do so. We would love to have you and I promise you will not regret it! BC Cool

One Time Event.
At present, there are no plans to do this again.
Not sure we well be able to get Bud again. Plus, once we do it in Chanute, not sure the Chanute folks will be interested again.
This type of thing is just a one time event. To show people this equipment is still around, is valuable, collectable, give thanks to Bud for what he created.
So, I highly recomend that if anyone wants to see a hugh amount of vinatage Kustom amps/guitars/organs, in one place, with Bud Ross, in the town that created these amps, you better come to this event.

I'm in, and I hope to meet a lot of you guys there.

Is there a schedule set up for the day or is it a play it by ear plan?

A couple of points here: First off thanks to Pleat and Neil (and anyone else that hasn't posted here) for all the time put in on this. It should be a real blast.

Second, I guess that the main group of collectors don't participate here, with the exception of Pleat. You know when you guys were planning on purchasing the Lotztone amp, you could have let us here know what was going on. I'm sure that some of us would have been happy to participate in the purchase and I personally would have not bid the price up to whatever it was that you guys finally paid.

Chicago Bill, we did not want to exclude anyone from wanting to chip in on the Lotztone amp that was on ebay a year ago. Bud called me and asked if I would place a bid on it. He was afraid that if it were known that he wanted it, the price might have sky rocketed. I sent a note to the collectors that I knew, told them what was going on, and we really only had a short window of oppertunity to get our game on, the auction was ending that same night. We won the auction and the seller was only 20 minutes from Bud so everything worked out great. I know Neil will be posting a schedule soon. A lot of us will be rolling in sometime Thursday night to welcome everyone. The jam session will be saturday night after dinner. Even with out a jam, this is going to be one weekend to remember.

Don, that last line about the red amp was hitting below the belt. Trust me, I would love to go to Chanute. It's not that far away and I know the trailer is road worthy and you would get 13 solid pieces for the display. I remember the time when Elvis came to Milwaukee and I told my wife we should go. Well as it turned out, we didn't and he died soon after. Hindsite is 20/20. Have fun. If that red K100 shows up see what you can do for me.

Neil:
I'm just a guy that posts here.

Yes, I am coming, but because I didn't know what the real schedule was, I will only be spending the day on Saturday. If I knew about the old factory tours, etc. I would have made other arrangements.

I will not be bringing anything to the show, other than my wife.
