Greetings to everyone. I'm happy to have found such a great resource. A friend of mine uses a black 2x15 T&R setup for bass and his sound is great. I've always liked the look of these amps and have read a about them in various books ("AMPS!" comes to mind). I'm looking to get my feet wet and have a line on a 250-1 head (one jack needs to be fixed and both lights are out) for cheap. I'm curious, are the 250s any good for guitar and do they take well to overdrive pedals? Thanks for any input.

Welcome aboard, you have found the greatest site to talk Kustoms from players who still use them and collect them.
In answer to your question, Kustoms do really well with effect pedals. I personally run a 25 watt K50 single 12 kustom amp, with a Roland GR33 processor and a Digitech RP1 processor. It is amazing how many people can't believe that I get all that sound from such a small amp. The input jack is a small issue to repair. The pilot lamps are ava. but a little tricky to replace. Most of the K250 slant metal face amps, have had a lot of problems with the on/off switch falling apart after so many years, and they are not made any more, so if your amp is working, you can read some past posts on how a lot of players have fixed broken switches. Again great to have you onboard and you'll find everyone is helpful in answering any questions you may have.

Thank you for the welcome. According to the owner, everything else is working, but I think I'll take it to a professional to clean it up if I like the way it sounds. Do the 250s do well with guitar? I'm not looking to get any distortion out of the amp, just a flat to warmish clean sound. I'm also a little concerned about running it through my current cabs (both are 100 watts, but I think the 250 pushes more than that). Perhaps I should hold out for a lower wattage t&r, but he's letting it go for pretty cheap ($100+ whatever I put into it to fix it up).

I'll throw in a welcome as well. I have a 125 head with the 2-12 cab that I've used for guitar and keyboard. Does well for both. The numbers on the older models, in your case, 250, was more or less the peak power rating. The true RMS number is 1/2 of that number. So it's 125 watts RMS. Of course another factor to consider is the ohm ratings on your cabs in relationship to the head. You may find the info on here somewhere, or someone else may chime in, but I believe that your head is 4 ohm. Cool

Thanks. My cabs are both 8 ohm. Maybe if I run them together...

Yea, that would normally result in a 4 ohm load to the head and would be optimal power outputting. Probably will sound great. Not to mention the fuller sound you get with 2 cabs. Cool

That 250 will make a great guitar head. Back in the late 70s a local guitar player had lost his Peavey Standard head in a fire. He was a working musician and had to have some gear so the cheapest thing he found was a 250-1 with the covering ripped off and the wood case painted black. He loved it, and it sounded great with his pedal array on the 6x10 PV cabinet. He later had a local shop wire in a master volume for additional control. It served as his main player for a few years. Time passed and he moved on to other gear. I saw the same old 250 in a pawn shop about a year ago still working and easily recognized by the rigged master volume. I went back the next week to try to get it but it had sold. Great for guitar.....buy it! BC Cool
