Hey does anyone know what the Altec horns were rated for power wise? Were there any difference in the drivers used for the 1-15H vs. 2-15H cabs. What kind of crossover did they come with and at what frequency did they start shunting Highs to the Horn??
Thanks....

If you go to the unoffical altec home page you can find all of this info and more!
The 802 serise of drivers as used by Kustom went down to 500 hz and was probibly crossed over at around 800 to 1000 hz.
The driver could handle 30 watts RMS down to 500 hz, a tad more when crossed over higher.Just note that with HF drivers a distorted square wave signal at 20 watts is more likly to blow the driver tha a clean signal at 35 watts!

So ...Ev drivers?? Are current replacement drivers available... The cabs I'm buying are in good working order. But would hate to blow one of them with out replacements available. I hear Great Plains Audio in OKC Repairs Altec stuff... Do the horns Kustom used have a Altec part # I can look for a driver for it Thanks again for the info Don

Here is a link to the EV site and if your Kustom cabinet has the finned driver on the back then it is the 1823 and gives all the specs, I was mistaken on power handling, it is rated at 110 watts Peak Power and the spec sheet will explain power ratings.

Thanks for the link...I will check it out..May not be getting those 1-15H cabs right now ...found an Ultrarare 600 Pa within driving distance with 2 302 columns all with covers...no stand but how often do those actually show up!!He wants $400 for it... Was a church Pa and wasn't beaten up gigging. It is supposed to be really clean and minty looking... we'll see of course but the horn cabs will have to wait...maybe the seller of the Horn cabs will become desparate and help lower the high...650 he's asking for the horns... They are finned drivers from one of the photos of the insides of the cabs... I still want them... Just Not at 650 for the pair.....

The early cabinets I have seen had the Altec drivers, I guess this is another issue for Less to see if he has any info on when they changed over to the EV drivers. It may be that the EV drivers where used on the higher wattage set ups?

The photos I have show finned drivers but they are simply marked Kustom and nothing else on the rear of driver. According to LesS the cabs were made mid 1972 to mid 1973 time frame frome the serials I supplied him. I hope these will still be available when I get back from Springfield,Mo on family matters. I do appreciate the information all have contributed to my Kustom endeavors..

I'm not sure that Kustom ever used Altec drivers, but I do know Kustom did use Atlas drivers with the siren horns. In the later years they did use some Emilar horns and EV drivers in some of the last of the hard tolex kustom horn packs.

Yes, I know about the big EV drivers like we had in our mid 70s Kustom PA with 2 folded horn 2-12 EV loaded cabinets and massive EV horn drivers that where heavyer than the EV 12s!
