Hi,

Did Kustom use particle board on the K250 cabinet?

There is one on ebay, the tuck & roll is torn and it looks like particle board.

I believe that on the K100 and K200's (production ended July 1971 except for PA model) Kustom used 100% plywood - for amp and speaker cabinets.

The SS combo series (started July 1972) had some particle board, I don't know about the K150's and K250's (started Aug 1971).

On a Charger I once had, the speaker baffle, back, and spacer board that amplifier sits on were particle board.

On the slant face series kustoms they did use particle board. I never kept track of serial numbers so dating when it actually started I don't know. I've owned the K150 series 2x12 cabinets in both plywood and one in particle board. I've owned 5 of the folded horn 118 cabinets and one I bought in Detroit at a pawn shop was really heavy compared to the other 118 cabinets. I thought someone might have installed a 18" JBL because of the increased weight. Got it home took the back off and it was a cabinet constructed of particle board. I think it would be interesting if everyone who owns a kustom cabinet with the silver threaded black grill cloth could let us know the serial number and if it's wood or particle board.

See Kustom eras below - this is just a guess - but my guess is that the particle board started sometime around speaker cabinet SN 42000
If this is accurate, for example spkr cab SN 35000 would be plywood, spkr cab SN 48000 would be particle board.

By any chance, did Baldwin buy Kustom some time around July 1972 ?
(I read somewhere that it was 1979, but I'm not sure that is correct.)

Kustom eras / time periods

1)..Frankenstein era - 1965 to June 1967 (starting with SN 2001)
2)..K200A series era - July 1967 to April 1968 (starting with SN 15xxx) (K100 started SN 19000 Nov 1967)
3)..K200 A to B series transition period- April 1968 to June 1968 (starting with SN 238xx)
4)..K200B/K100 series era (before combos)- June 1968 to Sept 1969 (starting with SN 258xx)
5)..K200B/K100 series / K100/K25 Combo era - Sept 1969 to June 1970 (starting with SN 444xx) (also, ~Nov 69 Kustom starting putting SN's on spkr cabs)

6)..K200B/K100 series / K150/K50 Combo era - July 1970 to July 1971 (amps SN 57000 to 73500) (spkr cabs SN 12000 to 28500)
cabinet construction: 100% plywood

7)..Slant Face amp era (before SS combos) - Aug 1971 to June 1972 (amps SN 73500 to 87000) (spkr cabs SN 28500 to 42000)

A 3x15 and Particle board has to weigh in at about a Kabillion pounds! Got the Boys helping you move that baby?

It is the "Kool Black" 3x15 we had on stage in Chanute. Heavy but sounds great! Since it is only the fourth 250 series 3x15 (straight cabinet not slanted) I have heard of in 35 years, and only the second I have seen, I wonder how many were made. BC Cool
