New guy- 1st post. Just got my first Kustom, a 250-1 that I have hooked to a Peavey 2x15 bass cab. I LOVE this sound! I doubt I will ever even play another amp for bass. My problem is the top channel (with the Varitone control) acts up. If I play certain notes it starts crackling pretty bad and then just goes quiet. I have to turn volume down and plug up to channel 2 (bottom channel) and let it reset itself (wich it does). Bottom channel has no midrange control, you spin the pot but nothing changes. I like the top channel better because I can dial it in just perfect with the v-tone on 2 and it seems to be significantly quieter than the bottom channel. I guess I need to pull it out and clean it as best I can. Anything specific I should check based on the problems mentioned? I also got a 300 PA set-up from the same guy. I LOVE Tuck-n-Roll! Thanks!

Welcome to the place.

Some if not all of your problems could be caused by dirty controls and PC board connectors. Get yourself a can of DeoxIt and spray a little into the back each of the pots and into the input jacks.

Each of the boards in the amp are connected together with plug in Molex connectors. These can sometimes get dirty or can come loose from vibration, so pull off each one, spray a little DeoxIt on the pins and firmly re-seat the plugs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Chicagobill. I thumped the mid knob with my finger pretty hard and it started working!?! I think I will clean everything out good and then see what I have to work on. I just can't seem to get motivated to take this apart right now, I'm enjoying playing it too much! This thing just has "THAT" sound that I've really been looking for. Maybe I can convince myself to go back to the Ampeg for awhile while I work this one over. I will post questions after I get it cleaned out. Thanks!
