We wanted to post this as soon as everything was in place. The core group of Kustom collectors I hang with, are doing our annual convention again this year in Chanute, KS. on the weekend of Sept. 17th and 18th. The location chosen this year will be at the Chanute Pavilion downtown. The Pavilion is larger than the building we used last year. There were about 275 pieces of kustom amps on display that 30+ collectors brought to Chanute last year. We came from all over America from 12 different states. Bud was on hand for the weekend, along with a lot of his family. We were really honored, not only with Bud and family, but with the great turn out of past employees who shared their stories of what it was like working at Kustom back in the 60's. There were a lot of personal photo's on display of the early years, and documents that were seen for the first time by many of the collectors. Hats off to Carolyn for bringing such great photo's, documents, magazines and other items. One former employee brought in a black T&R footstool made from the speaker cutout section of the baffle boards.

Some of the high-lights, were Friday and Saturday night jam sessions, using all the vintage amps and PA's. Real old school and it sounded amazing.
We decided on Chanute again this year, because it's where it all started, and to gain more insight from Bud and the employees. We felt that since none of us are getting any younger. If we were to have access to the wealth of information in the Chanute area we knew it was a no brainer to go back before it's too late.

It was an eye opener to see the look on the faces of old employees who just couldn't believe that after 40+ years, anyone would go to such great lengths to preserve, and actually still use the Kustom amps they built. Many of the collectors swapped and purchased a lot of vintage kustom amps and even a prototype K200A guitar in sparkle green to yellow sunburst surfaced that I took home with me. Many of the old employee's still have kustom amps and items sitting at home, one of kind speaker cabinets, or a PA cabinets that didn't quite make it into production. Below is a link that captured last year events, including Bud on stage singing with some of the collectors and was reunited with his original band mates from 1958. It was at this time, when it was getting started in the back of his mind, to cover the amps they used in T&R and eventually turned into what we now cherish. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever, press and radio coverage to really let the folks of southeast Kansas that we are returning again. Here is the link to see not only last year's event, but also past events we've held in Nashville, Indy, Arlington, TX. http://www.kustomcollector.com/id28.html Bud just informed me this week that one of his original sax players that was at the convention last year, passed away three months after our event. We would really encourage everyone to attend, we know it's not easy, but it will be time well spent with the most dedicated kustom amp collectors in the world. This is my 12th year being part of the best group of musicians, and marks my 10th year traveling to our gatherings.
I doubt you will ever see a group of fender or peavey amp collectors ever, doing what we do on a scale this large, and to put the icing on the cake, we have Bud at our side. Don't forget to wish Bud a Happy Birthday on May 31st.

Great info Don!

We had a ball last year. I met a great group of Kustom collectors, not to mention meeting Bud Ross and old Kustom factory employees. Learned a lot and shared some wonderful sories. Can't wait for the convention this year.

I attended last year and got to meet a few of the guys here, like Pleat and JC and BC and Carl. It's always great to have a face to go with the names.

Last year I found out about the show a little too late to arrange for a local motel stay and missed a lot of the fun. Hopefully this year I'll be able to be there for the whole show.

Bud Ross is a real hoot, oh and by the way HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY BUD!

I look forward to seeing any and all of you guys there.

On a side note - Most of us are staying at the Super 8 out on Santa Fe and 35th ~ If you mention that you are with the Kustom amp group you get a $51.50 a nite rate with the ablity to cancel as late as that day. Or you can go online and get a non-refundable rate of around $49.95. Hope to see you there Bill, and of course your lovely wife!

I have been to Chanute 3 times so far, 1970, 1972 and last year. It is the holy land for kustom collectors. Last year we were invited to tour the downtown original factory, the building downtown where the guitars were built, and the main plant that was build on Chestnut St. Where most of the amps were manufactured. The building on Chestnut now is home to Kustom Signals. They produce radar and laser guns and video equipment for the law enforcement industry. We were surprised to see a charcoal T&R metal stool left over from the early days. We even saw a complete Sidewinder chassis still sitting on a bench.
We have been making plans for this event since January and it will be the best time to meet everyone from the town and of course the man who started it all. Bud Ross himself.
Happy 70th Bud.

HI, I'm really new to the web board but Long time Kustom fan, I'm 30 years old and prolly a young gun to most of you collectors. I Thinking of coming down from Minnesota to check this thing out and talk to you Kustom Kats. Can anyone give me some details on times and events that take place? Sadly I wont be able to lug my collection down, but maybe an amp of choice? Up here in Minnesota there really isnt much drive for Kustom amps. So Id love to chat it up with you folks!

Sunnhead, great to have you onboard here on the site, and really great to hear your thinking of the convention in Chanute. Age is not important, since some of the collectors kids now share the addiction and are at many smaller events we hold. Besides we need younger collectors to help us load in and load out the amps.

A lot of us are arriving on Thursday evening. We'll go out for a burger and a couple of drinks, catch up on what we brought, and get ready for friday.
Friday morning: load in the amps, and we've been invited to do a radio spot again this year. Opening the event to the public at noon. You can hear the radio spot we did last year, click on the link that is in the original post and click Chanute Convention tab, and there is a link just below the yellow bar on the left just above the first photo on the left.
Friday night jam session till 11:00. Bud will be on hand, and is always a treat to see what he may be bringing.

Saturday morning, breakfast with the group. Doors open to the public at noon and run till 10:00. Load out that night and hit the road Sunday for home.
We know that some collectors won't be able to haul every piece of kustom gear they own, but bring what you can and photo's are great and we will have an area for photo's.
We have one collector in VA. that has at least 158 pieces the last time I counted and I know he has added several more since then. The one thing I learned from last year is to leave enough space for at least one amp to come home with me.

I'd have so many questions! I started collecting when I was about 20. I got this weird Kustom cabinet, turned out to be a fake. Then I got a 4x10 Kustom cabinet. I haven't seen or hard much about these. Im going to try to convince my GF to come along, but she has really no interest in Amps, but she lets me have them so that's great. Ill see whats on my agenda and make some arrangements.

sunnhead, great to know your GF supports your amp addiction.
Kustom made two versions of the 4x10 cabinet. First generation would be in the 67 era. It is the same size as the 2x15 cabinet. Sealed back, 2 port holes behind the grill cloth. JBL 10" speakers came standard in that version. The second version, again is the same size as a 2x15 cabinet, but the top two 10" speakers were vented out the back of the cabinet. The lower two 10" speakers were ported out the front with two 3" port tubes. The cabinet had internal panel to seperate the upper and lower speakers.

OK, I'm in! Some questions here... So when the big Jam goes down, what kind of music is mostly played? I'm into Classic rock, so anything 1955-1979 im pretty much in to. I am a keyboard player/Bass player, I don't own a Kustom Organ, I'm really hoping one shows up so I can admire it! But I do play Hammond Organ, Is that not aloud? I don't wanna break any rules on the Kustom bash. I noticed a guy playing a MOTIF on the Kustom organ last year. Also How is the buying/trades for amps at this great get together? I'm not the richest fellow but if there is a amp or two I gotta have are people fair? Some on Ebay are so crazily priced it's impossible to buy. I don't have any colored cabs nor amps, all mine are black, so I'm looking for some nice Color. Im going to drive my ol' chevy van down with some cool things I own to show off Very Happy Thanks in advance for any information about this event. Super Excited to meet all you collectors, and as far as the Jam that will be BOSS!

Id love to get a kustom organ, but im not sure that will happen. So much i am hungry to learn about Kustom. Ive seen cool cabs in such in pictures but to see them live.... sweet! Looking forward to meeting all the collectors and the excellent amps!

As a side note. If anyone would like to jump onboard and become a part of the core group of collectors daily emails, send me a note at djt@chartermi.net and we'd be happy to add you to the Kustom mayhem. It would give you a chance to get to know us, find out where we are located, how the planning of the convention is coming along, what we are swapping, what we're buying. We may be able to help you find what you may be looking for, thinking of buying or what you may have and want to swap for a different kustom.
This is pretty much how all of us got together in the beginning and it's a great bunch of collectors.

Hi, just found this site and see I missed this event. Would love to make it to next year's, and shouldn't be too difficult since I live just up in Des Moines. I wouldn't call myself a collector, but I love my K200A-1 2x15 and am always excited when I see a Kustom somewhere. Wish I had a collection of them!

Charcoal, I think. Looking at the colors they had available that one looks closest, although to my eyes mine seems to have a slight greenish champagne-like cast to it.

I had thought perhaps the green-ness might be an age thing.

Well, the 17th is when my town has its Route 66 party, and my wife and I play a big part in that, but me and my Kustom Theremin should be there sometime after noon on the 18th if all goes well.
See ya'll there........Rob.

If there were, I'd consider trying to make it. Also, i figured out the greenish cast is definitely either an age thing or in my head, my kustom is definitely charcoal.

Is there a Kustom Get-together 2011? If so, I'd like info on it. I have several Kustom amps to show/sell/trade.
