Well, I knew it would happen. As soon as I plunked down a bundle for a red K100, look what shows up no more than 2 weeks later.

I'm going to track this one and see if I'm just a dumb ass.

I didn't watch the one you bought, but if you can go back to that auction and see how many people were bidding and if there were a lot of repeat bidders. This may be what the seller of the amp on auction now was watching the auction that you won. Hoping to recapture some of the people who were bidding against you.
I prefer the K100-1 heads. The one on auction now, is the single bright channel K100-2 and are very thin sounding amps. Looks like the cabinet is loaded with CTS speakers which might add a more low end.
In any event, I look at it like, what can you buy in todays amps for a grand that's made in America, and has anything near as cool looking as a Red T&R. Besides we've see kustom kat dolls bring in excess of 2K a few years back, and it's only a stuffed doll.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. The one that I bought is a K100-1 and has a single CTS 15 and I plan on immediately replacing it with a JBL E130. That should be a good crossover for guitar or bass. Either that or I pull the baffle from one of the others for the 12" Jensens. Or, just make a 2x12 baffle with new speaker cloth. I love options. I use the tremolo a lot so my main amp is a 2x12 cloth dome Jensen loaded K100-2. If I want a different color, I just pull the chassis and swap them out.

Conrad, check the impedance of that CTS 15". I'd bet it's 16 ohms if its original to the cabinet. I have a kustom wiring chart from 12-11-68 and it shows the K100, K200, K400 all using 16 ohm speakers. I always found that strange since the K100-1 and K100-2 were max output on a 8 ohm total load. I had the same amp and cabinet you have and it was really quiet compared to other models I had with a 2x12 cab. The 115 cab didn't really make much of a statement for power when compared to a 2x12 cab. Of course 2-12s move more air than a single 15 but not a level playing field with 16 ohm speaker.

I have a gold K100 that had a 16 ohm CTS speaker. I didn't like it at all. It sat and I wouldn't use it. I know of the impedance issue so I traded it, even up, for a JBL E140. Nice deal. The transformation was striking. The thing sounds great. I just think an E130 would have just a little loss in the low end freq response but I would gain considerably in the high end. 2500 vs. 6000. I would think that would make a very nice combination. Besides, both of those were offered in the original D series. I could never reach the power limits either.

Have you considered the Altec 418's or 421's?

I haven't only because I have a stash of JBL E frames and I recone them to whichever flavor I need at the time. I have always been partial to JBL since I bought a set of Cabaret cabinets in 1985. The E130's are as clean a speaker as I have ever heard. I just don't have any history with Altec. And right now, no money either.
