I have recently begun my Kustom collection. It is something I always wanted to do, but never seemed to find the time, (or money!) My first "toys" are a black K200-B1 head and a black K200-B5 head. Looking for either some 2-12", 2-15", or (wishfully thinking) - a 3-12" black cabinets. I have done some general maintenance on them both - cleaning the pots, etc. - both seem to work fine. The K200-K5 PA head has a very sensitive reverb - can hear the "springiness" with the slightest movement. Can I simply unplug the reverb can to disable it ?? Please let me know if you can point me in the direction of a good speaker cabinet - empty is fine. THANKS - Philip Braud Bainbridge GA

It's a project for sure, but the naugahyde and grillcloth don't look too bad. It'll need handles, a back, some speakers and maybe casters, but for $40, who can argue?

Welcome to the site. I'd check the reverb tank and make sure both springs are stil suspended. If one is broken and is still hooked on one end, might be why the reverb is so sensitive.

Hello and welcome to our Kollective sickness!
New reverb pans are less than 30 bucks so I would just replace it, but for now if you just unplug the RCA cord from the output makred side of the pan and from the amp.

Just a thought - Not sure if you know that the two heads you own are too wide for the 2x12 cabinet. They match up perfect with the 3x12, 2x15 and of course the 3x15 cabs. But they will hang over the edge of the smaller cabinet - Just in case. But if you are going after 2 each for a PA rig - Then of course I'm way off base!

Thanks JC - my dream would be to have (2) 2-12 cabinets, but I will settle for a 2-15. I know the 3-12 cabinets are rare, but would LOVE to have one ! I have always liked 12's for bass.

Philip, and easy way to judge a cabinet in a photo if your not sure is to count the T&R across the top. The T&R's are 2" so if you count 11 it's 22" and fits the Frankie series. 12 T&R are the K200 series and the K250 series. 10 T&R would be for the K100-1 and K100-2 series amps. Of course most are easy to tell by the size of the ports, but the first series of the K200A amps, not all of them had the aluminum ports, so it's important to know if it's a frankie cab or a K200 cab. The Frankie cabs weren't offered with the aluminum ports. That series had the 3" ports behind the grill cloth and some didn't.

Phil, just keep in mind that for bass it`s nice to have the full 100 watts RMS on hand to use that the amp is capabile of putting out.

.In that regard the K200 serise amps they do that with a 4 ohm load.

Most vintage K200 2-15 cabinets with stock drivers are 8 ohm ( two 16 ohm drivers in parallel) which will hold the amp back to some 60 watts RMS, down from the 100 watts.

The 3-12 or 3-15 cabinets are 5.3 ohms, which works fine as it`s close enought to 4 ohms.

All K100 cabinets in a 2 driver form or 1 driver fromat are 8 ohms also.

If you like 3- 12s for bass their is nothing stopping you from using a 3-15 cab, you can make up adapter plates for the 12s that will bolt up to the original 15incher stud`s to have your way and still not lose the value of the cabinet.

This in fact would be a great way to go due to the fact that the 3-15" cabinets are two small cubic ft wise internally ( they are 1.5 DB louder, but provide little extra bass) to support real good bass.
Loading it with 3-12s would provide you with far more choise`s on 12" bass driver`s to use that may need more interior cu ft volume than the real K200 3-12" cab would provide!

All good idea's. The only thing I differ with is, All K100 cabinets used 16 ohm speakers. The 2x12 were two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel for a 8 ohm cab. The 115 cab used one 16 ohm speaker. Kustom only used 16 ohm speakers at that time, which cuts the wattage of the amp compared to the same amp with a 2x12 cabinet. Inventory of all 16 ohms speakers was simple, and added to the reliablity of the amps. The exception were the 10" and 12" speakers used in the PA columns. The mis match didn't do the 115 amps any justice with regards to power, but it did keep the amps stable and running for years without service issues.

I agree with Pleat about the 16 ohm speakers. I traded a CTS 15 for a JBL 8 ohm speaker. When I had the speaker out, I measured the voice coil. The resistance was 12.6 ohms indicating a 16 ohm speaker. This cabinet was totally original. The 1x15 really sounds great with that upgrade. More power too.
