A couple of weeks ago, I purchased one of those new Gibson SG Specials with the "Faded" finish - "Reasonably Priced" (At least in Gibson's opinion). Anyway....up until now, I've been playing it thru my smaller (non-Kustom) amps. This is because I usually play late at night, after the kids have gone to bed. But I couldn't wait for the opportunity to play it thru my Kustom. You see, I only play my "Big Rig" when I can play it the "right way".
Today, the wife and kids went out for the afternoon.........
I hooked up the SG, a Dan-O Reverb pedal, and a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal to the 200B-1......
OH.....MY.....GOD!!!!!
The sound/tone coming out of that 2x15 cabinet was incredible! The combination of this guitar and that amp is amazing! In addition to the great tone, I believe it actually made me play better. I'm serious. I'm an average, intermediate player. But today, I played for two hours straight. I was playing stuff I didn't even know I could play!
I think it even qualified for one of thse "Magical" experiences!

Good morning Gene....... I heard you got a SG (from that 'other' forum). Do you like it better than the 'Dot'? I 'spect we'll be hearing some Clapton and Townsend stuff now.
Ain't it amazing what a little 'verb and effects will do for a Kustom bass amp? I like to think having good gear inspires us to be better than we normally are. At least that's what I tell the missus when a G.A.S. episode strikes.
Speaking of adding reverb to a bass amp .... I've got a Fender Reverb unit I like to plug into the loop - whether I try it on a K200B1 or a K100SC 1x15 it can really bring things to life. And, I like to plug a mic into the same reverb unit when I try a little recording - it makes me sound better than I really am.

Roy - Funny you should ask......
I wouldn't say I like the Dot over the SG or visa-versa. They both sound good - just a little different.
Up until recently, I wasn't real thrilled with my Dot. It sounded OK, but not really what I expected. Upon receiving a lot of suggestions from others, I changed from Fender Pure Nickel 10's to Gibson Pure Nickel 11's (Vintage Reissue). I also had the Dot re-setup professionally. (The store where I bought it includes a free setup during the first year). Man, What a huge difference! The Dot now sounds really GREAT!. Along with the SG, the Dot also likes my Kustom best.
In answer to your original question. If I had known a few weeks earlier that my Dot could sound this good, I'm not so sure that I would've bought the SG. The Dot is mellower and the SG is brighter when playing clean (as you would expect). But when using mild to medium distortion, I cannot detect any difference in tone between the two.
Hope this answers your question.
hey guys..had to chime in since I've been running my 64 SG into my kustoms since around 1986 when I bought it as a used guitar for under $400 in pristine condition which it still is...through my boss pedals it gives me a great pallet of tones...and its lightweight so 4 hours was a breeze for the old back...anyway.. I can appreciate the experience you're having Playing Loud on your SG/kustom rig...ET
I'll toss in my 2cents, I don't have either the SG or a 335, but I would really recommend the Darco Strings. They are the longest lasting strings I have ever used. From set to set, year after year. I found over the years changing brands of even the same gauge, required small adjustments for intonation. The darco's are the first not to require tweaking. I use them on my strat, my les pauls and everyone should grab a gibson nighthawk 3 pickup model. Best of both worlds. Strat, tele, les paul sounds all in a very light weight guitar. The best part is, you can buy a dozen sets of darco's for 26.95 through American Musical Supply. That's 2.24 per set + shipping. Not a bad deal. That's a lot better than the 4 to 8 dollar per set at the stores. The Darco's are made by Martin.
Now my secret is out. Don
