I just picked up a Kustom 88 electric piano the other day and the two selection buttons for the tremolo and speed appear to be stuck in the pushed in position (and do not light up or turn on). To confuse things, the pedal also wasn't working but I was able to reconnect it using some speaker wire to complete/break the circuit. The weird thing was once I did that the lights on the buttons came on and the tremolo and speed functions started working! I'm not sure if this is some weird coincidence though and unfortunately when I turned it off and back on later the pedal worked, but the two buttons refuse to light up or turn on their functions.

Any thoughts on what might be causing the malfunction in the buttons? Could this be somehow connected to the pedal jack? I was thinking I could try and figure out how to replace the buttons or hardwire them to always be on, but if there is something more straight forward that I could do, I'd be happy to try that first.

Thanks!

Welcome to the place.

I've never worked on one, but from what you have described, it sounds to me like you have a loose connection that is keeping the switches and effects from working. When you worked on the footpedal you moved some wire bundle or something and it made the connection to the trem circuit.

Try and see if moving anything will get the lights to light up. More specifically, try and trace the power supply circuit that powers the trem circuit, because if there is no power getting to the circuit, the lights will not light up and the effect will not turn on.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply, I think you are probably right about the loose connection. However, I managed to release the stuck selector buttons and now they do turn on with some effort (as the buttons are still kind of sticky). I will track the power supply circuit though and see if there is something else going on as well though.

Thanks again,
Josh

Is it possible that something was spilled on the switches? I've seen soda spilled on things that will leave a sticky mess.

That is definitely possible... apparently the previous owner had it in a bar/restaurant for years.

Does any body have any suggestions for the K88? I've seen a few other posts in other places that have mentioned running it through an EQ and some pedals.
