Hello,

Just found this board and signed up right away... I just bought my first Custom amp (V-Lead) and love it. While I was installing an AC power- line filter, I accidently severed a lead on one of the electrolytic capacitors such that it can't be re-attached. The cap is made by Mallory but ther is no legible part number on it. Does anyone have a schematic to reference this part ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know which cap you are talking about, but they are all marked with a value somewhere.

If you better describe where this cap is and what it looks like, we may be able to help you out. Maybe you could post a photo?

Re: more info on the cap in question: This is a Mallory (axial-lead) electrolytic cap. Rated: 1900 MF, 40V. Markings on the cap also include '095-0015-03' and 235-7708A. I googled both numbers and turned up nada. These caps are approx 3" long and slightly less that 1" in dia.

I don't have a schematic for the V-Lead but, there are 2 of these babies placed side-by-side on the board. From looking at the trace connections on the PCB, it looks like they are series connected between the transformer and a (full-wave?) diode bridge.

I have taken some pictures but, can't figure out how to attach them to this board. Let me know how I can send these to you and I will send them out asap.

Then those are the main filter caps for the positive and negative power supplies. I would suggest the current standard value of 2200uF at 50 volts as a replacement. The modern caps will be much smaller physically but will do the same or better job as the originals.

I would suggest replacing both while you are in there. I'd guess the cost of the caps will be minimal, maybe $4-$5 each. You may actually find these at Radio Shack.

Watch out for the polarity when you replace these, they may explode if you install them backwards. If you follow the leads from the rectifier bridge to the board you should find a positive and a negative supply line that will go directly to these filter caps, as well as two ac input wires that go to the transformer secondary. Because the grounded side of the two caps are opposite polarities, it will look like they are wired in series, but they do not come between the transformer and the rectifier.

By the way, the code numbers are the Kustom part number (95-0015-03) and the manufacturer's date code (235-7708). So the caps were made by Mallory during the 8th week of 1977.

Here are the parts to get from Mouser supply.
You will need to replace both main filters since I could not find any in the original 1900 mfd value, so we will go higher in both voltage and mfd/uf which is fine and better!

Order two of all three of these part numbers.

Main filters 140-XAl50v2200-RC
These caps measure 3/4" x 1.6"

bypass caps 5084-940c-10p22k-f

bypass cap 539-150223j250AA

Wire one of each bypass cap across each main filter cap.
If you need to extend any of the leads on these cap, do so with copper wire and then insulate them with shrink tubing.
Use silicone sealer to hold the bypass caps down onto the body of the main filers.

These added bypass caps will make for a much sweater sounding amp and remove alot of harshness that the main electrolytic filters impart in the sound.
These six items should run you all of 15 bucks.
