Anybody out there that can tell me much about the combos's during the baldwin era---smaller pleats, etc....specifically the charger bass combo----single 15" with CTS I believe... I have found one in charcoal that I can get for a song.... Good for guitar?----I play jazz, blues. Thyanx!! Woody

Start singing Woody! If the amp sounds too dark with the CTS you can sell it or trade it for a Jensen 15 or better yet a 418 Altec. If you are the handy man type you can change the speakerboard and use your favorite 12" or whatever. You will want an 8 ohm speaker if you change. Should be very smooth for Jazz...but use your favorite pedal if you want distortion for blues. I am a bass player...but the amps work well for any instrument if you use the right speaker. Some of the guitar guys prefer the CTS bass 12s to the Jensens.....it is up to your taste!BC

Thanx so much BC.....I know ET and some others don't care for these non-plexi Kustoms, but that doesn't bother me too much and I don't plan on selling it------ Woody

I wouldn't worry about the others too much... they also don't like black tuck-n-roll either. No accounting for taste!! I use the CTS 15" for guitar. They seem to have more than enough high end. I don't like to overdrive speakers for breakup.

Buy it and enjoy it! I like the non-plexi face stufftoo. They have good fat sound, and they are so ugly that they need good homes :-) You know, people who love them for what they sound like. As long as it has tuck-n-roll, it's kool.

ok...ya got my attention...first up...I am the kind of black kustoms... nobody loves em like I do...period. second, I guess I"ve said it so I"ve gotta stand by it to the death...no I"m not as fond of the slant series/charger series as I am of the older plexi gear...but its not that I frown on it at all...I just grew up with the older stuff and that look has been imprinted on my mind, emblazened on my heart forever. I"m thrilled to see guys playing anything tuck n roll with a big 'K' on it. There hope that clears the air for some of the newer guys.. I do want them to be proud of their rigs...for your old timers...black plexi kustoms still sound better than any of ya'lls sparkledy rigs.. I did a study on this...turns out that the light reflection from the sparkle sets up a refraction factor of particle emmissions around the speaker grill, this is exacerbated by the roll and pleating structure of the fabric surrounding the speakers and this causes distortion in the sound waves, particularly on Altec and JBL speakers. The distortion effect is 3 to the 12thEW of the radiant light factor hitting the amps so it is particularly worse under intense stage lighting. So in order to improve your sound I strongly advise that you pull all Altec and JBL drivers from your sparkle rigs and send them to me, I'll swap them out for some of the more appropriate Jensons that are in my black rigs right now. Even in your chargers, this can make a difference... I know, you don't need to thank me... I"m just that kinda guy.
