Last night our new un-named 3 piece band made their public debut at a outdoor party in very rural Clark County, Illinois. As some of you may remember, my previous band played their last date on New Year's Eve, and this new endeavor is the drummer, bassist, and guitar (me) from that band. And, to have our own identity and separate ourselves from the previous band, a new setlist. We have been rehearsing in my "studio" since April (as time and planting season permits). The host of this event had us set up in this open-front tin-roofed shed that was very close to the guests all occupying lawn chairs under the shade trees. Cook-out grill and keg were close-by as well. We kicked off playing Santana's Black Magic Woman, some old Aerosmith, Fogerty's Fortunate Son, some Collective Soul, i.e. to a small but enthusiastic crowd. After approx an hour, we took a break, while our host was entertaining the crowd by disposing of some leftover fireworks (mostly some glorified super bottle-rocket type airburst stuff). We had just strapped on our guitars and was waiting for the finale of the fireworks, when one of these "devises" shot sideways out of the launcher, streaked through the air at an altitude of about 3 feet, negotiating the 1 foot gap between a Kustom p.a. column and a Fender Twin, to explode behind the drummer on the back wall of the shed we were playing in. And setting a large supply of very dry firewood on fire. A quick-thinking volunteer fireman that was in the crowd had grabbed some iced-down bottled water and was right on top of it, extinguishing the as-yet small fire before it became a big fire. The entire incident happened so fast, I was still standing there with my guitar strapped on (but I was making mental notes concerning which stuff I was going to grab first). We played until midnite with our crowd staying right with us. Towards the end of the evening, our host and some friends approached the stage and announced they had a name for the new band ... they're calling it "Under Fire" ... and I suppose that's as good a name as any I can think of - plus - the beginnings of our new fan base picked it out - maybe we'll get a jumpstart on building our new following. Plus, during the course of the night I was hearing noises concerning future upcoming parties we could probably do. Who knows.....? All in all, I had as much or more fun than the audience. And the band was saved the trouble of coming up with a name.
