TeleBoy ~ I have been collecting for longer than some of these guys, and a lot less than the ET's and such. But your post reminds me of the joy I experienced when I bought my first Kustom on E-bay. Then getting an E-mail from BC regarding my purchase, draining his brain for all the invaluable info he has, then finding all of the guys you are now meeting thru the website. STARTING the website with Dan and the rest of the founding fathers! Thanks Tele, and have a blast. Jc

Hey Teleboy, Welcome and congrats! Far as I am concerned Kustom put out some of the best equipment money can buy, and darn sure the best lookin'. You will really enjoy it. The people on this site are great--always willing to help with any question you may have. There is loads of info archived here, so take some time to roll through the messages on the forums and check out the literature section for lots of mouth watering pictures and descriptions. You can learn a lot from those catalogs. I have two k200 amps (a and b models), and a KIII-L, which is a later version with tolex instead of tuck and roll. I am only 40 miles south of Chanute, KS, where the factory was. Good Luck and enjoy that Kustom. Thrill Bill

Hey Teleboy, I'm new on this site too, but these guys really make you feel welcome. I may be young on the site, but probably the most senior in age. I played a blue sparkle K200 bass amp in 1969. I eventually sold that amp, but I remember the pride I had when I pulled the covers off to play it. Here is a recent event that happened to me. We have two local musicians that are responsible for maintaining an Open Mic Nite at a local niteclub. They provide the equipment, the club provides the place, and a local internet webboard invites all local musicians to come bring their guitars and play. The turnouts are great, and some good pickers show up. Some bring entire bands for a small set. I brought my band, but I spiced it up by bringing my current Kustom amp. The looks, the ooo's and the aah's were worth it. I fired it up and played a few songs (loud)and the rest of the night they all played on that Kustom. Most of these guys were in their 20's and 30's. Course I think the club might be missing a few glasses that were rattled off the shelves. Yes, ET we played loud.

Yeah Guys listen to ET. give me a deal on a cab. even if it doesnt have speakers. I was almost going to buy a tuck and roll cab from this place i found on the web called the DOO WHOP SHOP but he only has new cabs that were made in china . I DONT THINK SO. the vintage ones had dove tail joints on the corners if im not mistaken and they dont fall apart. By the way what would be a good speaker set up if i want to use this head as a bass amp. 1x15 or 2x12's or 2x15's.???

Before Deb jumps in with her Carvin Advertisement, I like JBL E140's in a 2x15 configuration. These things will turn your innards into jelly. They are a bit heavy, 23 pounds each. The cabinet will weigh about 75 to 80 pounds but it is worth it. An E140 will go for 125 to 150 on Ebay. If you don't want the weight, a JBL D140 or K140 will work without the extended bottom end. If you want a wider range the E130 is an extended range speaker with a response to 6000 hz. Conrad

As I recall you are a six stringer....I think the best cab is a 2x12 with the "Heavy Jensens" (the ones with the square magnets) But I like to mix speakers and a round magnet Jensen and a CTS bass 12 will give you a lot of range......but JBLs are never wrong! I sold a blue 2x12 K-100 rig last year that had Radio Shack speakers in it....it sounded great for guitar! Lots of options out there. BC

Okay Conrad..... Carvins handle more watts RMS and will shake your teeth out!!!! And they area lot more reasonably priced! And, I've never blown a carvin--not even with a 250 on 10 with the bass all the way up!!!!!! That, and I can attest to the beautiful sound of all their 12" speakers. Check out the specs. JBL's also make for a very heavy cab..... and a lot more $ when they blow!

I could that one coming! I thought we should all play nice, and as ET says play loud. I have five of the K100 with 2x12 cabinets. Loaded with everything from CTS, Jensens, JBL's, Celestions and one rig with a Altec 15. They all Rock, I always have a tough time deciding which amp to take, so I usually end up taking a K50. I haven't owned any of the carvins yet, so I am out on that one, but I will try some down the road. last time out with a k100 I took a cascade 2x12 that is loaded with celestions, I really loved the sound I got with that combination that night. To many options, so little time. Glad to see we are getting more and more involved, keep rocking. Don

carvin speakers are made by eminence.logon to parts plus site and see their whole line along with better pricing than carvin.the eminence company was started by a former head of the CTS company in the early 70s I think. They are now one of the for most guitar amp speaker manufacturers.

Actually, the carvin PS 15 is made by emminence, but to carvin's specs. Higher wattage output is one area of difference, and there are others that escape my mind at the moment... One good reason to try a carvin is because they offer a 10 day money back guarantee. Try that with emminence! :-)

I've only got two of the 2x12 cabs..both are the older Ross brushed aluminum port models... my personal favorite..very beefy low end by cab design so for guitar I'm usually looking for a more airy sounding speaker that is sweet in the mids and not brittle, not to big a magnet so they can be moved by the lower wattage of our kustom heads...the CTS is my choice.. I do have some jenson rigs...I don't care for the brittleness and the way they break up sounds more dirty, nasty to my ears. I'm too cheap to afford the JBLS but really admire them in the bigger cabs...but my favorite guitar tones come from my kustoms that are pushing 10s..the little SC2x10 combos and one special cab which is the old Hi freq closed back originally holding a pair of siren 10" horns.. I loaded a pair of reconed CTS10s in there and run it with an old frank head and folks..it really just doesn't get any better. BTW, my little K25 stood side by side against a mesa combo last night..and yeah..he could get a bit louder...but at that point they were telling him to turn it back down...my K25 was running on 5 (12 o'clock), boss pedal setup into it and a hot humbucker guitar in my hands...nuttin but flat out rock n roll and there was nothing that the mesa had on my kustom in tone...I was quite proud...as always...oh..and there's a Peavey shefield in that box right now...uh huh.

ok...here's the official resolution to this whole deal...I've gathered all the specs, ran bench tests with my scope and, since I have every kustom head and cab model ever made, I"ve tested all possibilities. The indesputable conclusion , and I've told ya'll this before...but for the newbies...is that all speakers sound better in black kustoms. ya'll play loud! ET

And, there's this pristine little 100-1 and 2-12" cab sitting here in sparkly CHARCOAL that says "black is NOT where it's at." Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Heck, I sold my black 250 set because my blue one put it to shame! :-)

Hey Deb, why don't we, instead of a battle of the bands, have a battle of the colors. Yea, I know it sounds corny, but what the heck. Who knows?

This is a local event that we have annually, called The Battle of the Bands. All the local bands that think they are the best meet in one location and each group plays before a panel of judges to decide who is the best. Of course, a winner is named, but some will always disagree who was right. Me, I think blue sparkle rules. We could call it the Battle of the Colors @ The Kustom Extravaganza in Chanute. (did I spell it right?) I guess there is a little competitor in all of us, or showmanship. Play loud! Jerry

i remember a battle of the bands i was in . what a fiasco.i remember it like it was yesterday and that in itself is a miracle because i am a little fuzzy on things from the late 60's to the mid 70's if you know what i mean. it was 1969 at my highschool and it was a wmca good guy battle of the bands and we played against 3 other bands.to make a very long story short my band was the comedy band of the night. whatever could go wrong did. we did sunshine of your love and the singer was so out of it he forgot most of the words. we did devil with the blue dress and i was playing bass and i got into the song a little too much and i kept moving up to the front near the crowd and all of a sudden my cord was stretched to the limit and came flying out of the head and flew right by me at the crowd and about 15 people started ducking out of the way.hysterical.and our finale was you keep me hanging on by vanills fudge. the drummer was pounding on the symbols really hard and one must have been loose on the stand because the next thing we saw was this symbol comming of the stand and rolling around the floor until it came to a stop on the floor and eveyone just went berzerk with laughter.one of the other bands was wild because the organist was playing the organ with his nose. WHAT A NIGHT.
