Repairing the naugahide and control knobs [message #22141]

Just picked up Kustom 150. It has a couple of very small tears on the naugahide (black). What can I glue them back down with? Also a couple of the smaller knobs of the face of the amp are missing the shinny metal inserts. Was just wondering it you could cut some out of a coke can, and glue them in, or is there a simpler fix.

Hello and welcome!
You can glue tha tears down like I do and that is with black automotive silicone sealer/ gasket maker!
Just out enough on so that when you masking tape the tear down as it drys you do not have any sealer leak out around the cut.
In regards to the knobs unless you have a gasket punch set I do not know how the hell you would would make a nice round silver incert, and even than I do not know if a gasket punch set will have a size that will work, but if you have such. Auto tool set then I guess it's worth a shot!
What I would do just get new small knobs that you can order from Rickenbacker, the part number is 03564.

I think they will pass for now. It was my first attempt punching them out of a beer can. When I have 10 post I can put some pics up of them

Hello and welcome. Ive made the caps for the knobs out of aluminum cans using a hole punch. They came out exactly right but it looked like my beautiful Kustom amp was wearing little beer can caps. Then someone here pointed out Small Bear Electronics. They have exactly the right knob for a little over a buck each albeit bran new and shiny. Anyway if you order ten or more you get a bit of a discount, so I would re knob the whole amp and save the old ones for the next prize that comes along. Good Luck, Keith.

3M makes a vinyl repair kit and is sold at all Wallmarts in the automotive dept. Sells for around $12. Unfortunately just plain black is not offered by 3M.....I called them. So you will get multiple colors as well as black. Relatively easy to work with the trick is to work with small amounts and build up the repair. I also found using a hair dryer speeds up the process.....don't use a heat gun, I lost the grille cloth that way. The patch sometimes color wise isn't a complete match due the fact of the materials age. I have found that black upholstery paint works best to renew the look, just be sure to use alcohol to remove any polish or residue on the T&R. Good luck.

For you knob centers, take one to your local guy that makes decals and have him take some silver and make you some circles and put them in.....done! Just use black silicone to fix the cuts and I use clear packing tape to pull the cut together. If any oozes out, you can just peel it off when it dries.
