Buying a Kustom, what do ya'll think [message #2800] Fri, 06 June 2003 13:58 Go to next message

There's a music store in my town that has a lot of vintage gear in the window. The reason it's there is because none of it works but it all still looks cool. Anyway, I was in there to buy a new guitar (Epiphone Dot}and I couldnt help but notice the Kustom amp in the window. Plexiglass front, black tuck-n-roll, on the front it says Kustom 100 Chanute Kansas. It's got two sets of inputs. On one side of the amp it has trem-vib knobs, but the other side is just bass, treble, and volume. It's a 4x10 combo and when I asked what was wrong with the amp the owner told me that it is on consignment and the person who owns it used to gig with it but sometime in the 70's his girlfriend took a pool cue to all 4 speakers. I guess that explains the holes in the screen. I haggled with the amps owner and the shop owner and got them to agree to put 4 new peavy blue flame speakers in and sell it to me for $00. I had them tear it apart and other than the speakers, they can't find any problems with it. The tuck-n-roll is in good shape the side handles have a couple of tiny rust spots and it's obviously very old, but it looks cool as hell and the shop says they'll guarantee it so am I getting hosed here or is this a hell of a deal. I'm buying it today no matter what so I guess it doesn't really make a difference. But do anyone of ya'll know how old it is? I'mm guessing '68 or'69. Thanks

I found your post timely. There is a Kustom 100 C-8 (4x10) combo at a store near me I've been eyeing pretty closely. They're asking $495 but this shop has a history of dropping as much as 25% without too much arm-twisting. This amp has very good naugha, noticeable rust on handles, and original pilot light. Basically, pretty clean. I'm not so sure about whether the casters and speakers are original. One of the volume pots seems to be mounted a little crooked, another knob is missing the chrome center and about half of the rest are yellowed. Tell you the truth, I was thinking of offering $350 tops, assuming it sounds great. I've only turned it on to listen to how much hiss it has; haven't really played it - didn't want to look too interested too soon! Anyway, if the one you're looking at has new speakers, is otherwise near mint and sounds awesome I guess $400 may not be too high. After all, its not like you can just go down the road to the next store. I would say though, that $400 would be my upper limit unless I just couldn't live without it. Axeman

Hey Guys...glad to see the hunt is going well for both of you...the black 4x10s are pretty common rigs to fine relatively speaking..doesn't mean there's a ton of em out there to buy....just that among the mess of amps in the gang...you're likely to come across a nice black 4x10 without a lot of trouble.. I know that Keith Wilkes has one down in South Carolina in very nice shape...not sure on his price..but likely in your ball park...still, it's always great to have one in front of you...get to try it out...see it in person...and take it home no shipping. Here's how I"ve judged amp buying/pricing in the past...totally on emotion!!!! When I saw a clean rig in my home town.. I had to have it...period...now that my toy box is full.. I am a little more reserved so anything I tell you today on value is a load of bunk....cause its really about you getting into that first kool amp and I always urge guys to go for it. I have two 4x10 rigs...both are in excellent condition.. I mean as clean as anything you'd get off the show room floor. My black rig had a bit of a trade involved and some generous friendship..but in general terms...the rig was purchased for under $350 with cover. My other one is a beautiful blue sparkle..found it local about 7-8 years ago...the guy wanted $150 for it..what was I to do?! Then I looked for years for a clean 2x12SC with no luck...so when one finally showed up..even though it was just black...I paid the full $500 he was asking..ouch!...but I wanted..no...needed a minty 2x12...course the next year..a guy turns up with one in dead mint condition with cover for $160 plus shipping..so now I've got two of those...stereo!!! There are many more stories..but these are good examples of how pricing can run on these rigs...if I didn't have a nice 4x10 and found one that was in like new condition.. yeah.. I'd pay $400 for it...hope this helps...now go get those amps...n play loud! ET

My philosophy on this is if you want it and have the cash, buy it!!! I think the value of the new speakers makes it worth it to me... Deb
