Added to the collection [message #2730] Mon, 19 May 2003 10:45 Bill Messages: 64 Registered: March 2002 Location: Kansas Member I just bought a pristine Cascade Frankenstein 2x15 + horn....Sounds great, no noise. I had forgotten just how beautiful the Cascade color is! Gonna try a pair of E-140 drivers in it for bass and see what happens. I have three black k200's, and a KIII-L, so it is nice to have a little color in the lineup. Just had to tell everyone--Man is my head gettin' big. Senior Member Bill, you will not be disappointed in the E's. That is by far my favorite series. I have 120's, 130's and 140's in various cabinets. I have 2 E140's in Cascade 3x15 PA's with the horns. I have to reinforce the cabinet because they pump sooooooo much bass. I hardly need subs. Check out JC's picture post. I have pictures of my rigs in the collections (at the bottom) and in concert ( also at the bottom). My son was playing at a local music store's get together with 4 E140's pumping out 600 watts on bass and lovin' it. Like he said, the 140's are ribbed for his pleasure. I just got my Frankie 3x15 amp put together. Sounds really good. I have been driving it hard and loud all afternoon, as I want it to croak right here at home, if it is going to ,instead of one of the four performances this weekend. There are eight ports in the cabinet now, I kept the HF horn, installed longer studs to accomodate the E's thicker mounting rim, and a new grounded cord so's I don't get lit up. (Used to happen with an old Fender microphone I used with our K200 PA--would shoot a spark two inches! My lips would look worse than getting beat up by a red-headed woman.) haha. I also built new caster mounting plates, since this 3x15 cabinet didn't come with them. Must have been a later improvement. Also added a second brace patterned after the original. So it oughta hold together pretty good. On my old cab, I built a 5 inch extension that uses the original back. That one has the Carvin PS15's in it and throws the lows very hot. The extension isn't really noticeable unless you get a full side view. It all unscrews from the inside if I want to return it to original. That idea came from the discussion on getting more bass out of a Kustom cabinet on our forum. I have learned alot from everyone. 51 years old is a heck of a time to start back playing in a band....but it has been lots of fun. I will just have to hire a roadie to carry this monster....... (ha!)but not by much..and I think its the mileage anyway. Bill..you mentioned longer speaker posts...that was an issue for me this past summer when I tried to load some big ol Eminenca Kappa 400 pro series in my 2x15 rigs..again, not that there was going to be enough air in the box, but the rim of the speakers was so thick that the original kustom posts weren't going to do, and since they seem to be face mounted, it looked like I was going to have to tear up my grill cloth to make replacements..am I wrong on this?...ET Report message to a moderator

Got the speakers last night, so no way to pull it back out, since the baffle board has to go in sideways, the port tubes had to be mounted afterward.....This morning I laid one of the E140's in and that is when I noticed the studs were too short. So back to Ace Hardware for some longer carriage bolts (they didn't have the studs). Had to cut and file them down 1/2 inch, then drive out the old ones while holding out the grill cloth. Slide the new ones in place, which is a very touchy situation. One wrong move or a slip, and instant hole in the cloth. So, a word to the wise: put 'em in while the baffle is out. I used a small right angle awl to pry one side of each staple up, then a pair of dykes to remove the staples. Thrill Bill Report message to a moderator

I was hoping you were going to tell me that there are some kind of extenders that screw down over the original posts or something great like that that I hadn't seen at Lowes hardware...I"ve just been curious as to whether some of these big ol 400 watt 15s driven with proper juice would sound any better than my smaller wattage rigs.. and we've had some great discussions about cab air space especially on low end.. but in looking for punch I keep leaning towards hiwatt drivers and more power!.. I used my rig outdoors last weekend for the first time since adding a Mackie 1400 to power my 2x15s..it was a chance to throttle the rig wide open..and I get to a point where the mackie pushes the kustoms beyond their limit and I get a little bump sound that I know isn't good so I back it off at that point...don't get me wrong.. I'm impressed with what I'm getting out of them..and its enough for the wedding gigs.. I've just heard more punch out of say a single 15 PV BW cab getting slammed with a thousand watts...mind you ..it sure didn't look as good. but my grills are clean so I don't want to screw (no pun intended) with changing out posts if there is an extender solution...so back on topic...any suggestions guys...thanks..ET (and don't say buy another pair of kuston cabs cause ya know I will!) I'll have to take a look at the CArvins when time comes to get back into those cabs. Over the next month I've got a couple jobs but nothing that current gear won't handle..and we are finally moving into the new place...so once things get settled a bit I'll look to try out some more speakers...ya'll have a great weekend.. I"m off to see James Taylor in concert...no relation sorry to say..although there is some resemblance..both have a large schnoz. Report message to a moderator

Junior Member I spent a while this evening playing my Hamer Eclipse 12 string through my Kustom K200. As I was playing I remembered ET's recent post which mentioned Hamers. Let me just say the man knows good guitars when he plays them. I have three Hamers. Two are US-made; the Eclipse 12 and an Eclipse 6 string. The third is a Korean made Ecotone 335-style. Hamer's US-made guitars feature excellent hardware (i.e., Schaller tuners, Duncan PU's) and quality workmanship. I really like my Ecotone, but I've heard (and read on Harmony-Central) mixed reviews on some of the other import models. All I can say is they all three sound great through my Kustom and I'd stand right beside ET and sing their praises anytime. If you haven't tried a Hamer before, particularly the US-made models, and you come across one, definitely give it a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. An added bonus is that they tend to trade very reasonably on the used market. Axeman Report message to a moderator

Re: Added to the collection [message #2819 is a reply to message #2817] Thu, 12 June 2003 19:08 ET Messages: 146 Registered: October 2000 Location: Charlotte NC Senior Member appreciate the moral support..and at the risk of sraying from my kustom topic (yes, I do own a kustom guitar)..I'll have to admit that I do own an old faithful 64 Gibson SG, sweet rig with a couple pro mods made during the days when these were just considered used guitars..who woulda thunk...but its an old friend that I won't sell anyway...I did unload some other gibsons cause guys were paying stupid money for them.. I also keep one best effort Fender strat..its a custom made piece...no not a custom shop...I've got all the paperwork and this one wraps out at over $3k...its a nice guitar...but no better than my $350 NOS Peavey custom falcon rigs..which are also much prettier thanks to the highly flamed and book matched maple tops..real pearl inlays..etc...the kinda strat PRS would make if they did. anyway..around 8 years back I unloaded what liittle I had of the big headstocks...used the money to buy more kustoms and decided that my pro player rigs needed to be first quality, great looking, sounding, feeling..and in the end...make me smile all night on stage. The Hamer USA rigs I could find in the stores new for about $850 and these are retail $2200 guitars and at the time...way better quality than what Gibson was putting out...so I bought a couple..never regretted it..can I resell them at a profit..nope...would I want to...oh no! The PVs were even more obscene..intended to be $1000 guitars that competed on the $2000 level, these rigs can be had NOS from 1988-91 for $350 w/case top bucks...US good wood...great pro level rigs..so these two brands are what see the action here in the Carolinas...and every now and then just to impress the ignorant.. I pull out the other headstocks...and when I really need some soul food.. I pull out my red kustom K200 and all is right with the world.... ya'll play loud...ET Report message to a moderator
