I just bought one of the round, 2-button footswitches off eBay. $40. Based on what I've seen in the past, I thought that was a decent price. It needs paint, though - almost all of the black paint has worn or chipped off.

What kind of paint should I use do restore it to its former glory? Flat? Gloss? some kind of crinkle finish? (and it's black, right? I've never seen one in person, so I'm not certain.)

Black wrinkle paint will match the original finish. Heating the paint as it dries changes the texture of the wrinkles.

Rustoleum used to sell a spray can version that worked pretty well.

Thanks! Home Depot sells a Rustoleum "Textured" black spray paint. For "heated", do you mean like just hitting it with a heat gun for a few minutes after painting, or actually baking it in an oven for a more lengthy time?

A heat gun will work well, just try and keep the heat even across the object.

The hotter the paint gets, the finer the texture gets. I used to use it to simulate the wrinkle finish on old guitar amps from the 30's and 40's. They had a very fine texture pattern to the finish. Heating the parts in an old toaster oven would get the modern spray paint to look very close to the old time finishes.

VHT brand paints sells a spray black wrinkle finish for automotive use that I have found is more durable then the rustoleum.

I too have used the VHT on the rear baffles of Kustom SCs...works great. Also used it on old mic stand base to replicate original.
