For those of you who know me.....you are aware of my struggle to get the rest of the guys in the band in tuck and roll. Finally made it last Sunday at a place called Wolfy's on Broadway in Nashville. Black Kustom Challenger on lead guitar.....Black Kustom Sidewinder JBL on 2nd guitar, Charcoal Kustom 200 with 2x15 on Keyboards and a Cascade Kustom 250 with JBL 2x15 on bass............it was beautiful! We played loud and proud ET! BC

They can be taught! Proud of ya boys! I bet that did look cool...and it'll be the 2nd reason you get called back to music city..the first is cause ya'll sound great and have the best thunder god bassist around....now all yo need is to tuck n roll the drum kit..oh btw...what was the PA setup?..and how on earth is all that fitting in the back of that hearse? I cheat since our band is midi backed I'm the only live player on an instrument that needs an amp (female/male vocals, sax, guitar, all else is midi) but we do use all kustom PA gear and I always stick a little SC combo of some sort up there for my guitar so its tuck n roll all around..black of course....God we look good!

Thats cool that even your PA gear is Kustom ET.. BC, I'll bet that hearse is overflowing now. Thats good that you are getting jobs in the music city. Its not like they don't have enought tallent already so your show must be a pretty good one to be wanted so far from your home base.

yeah, I've told a lot of guys about this before, so apologies to the olduns,,,but I am pleased with my setup...we are a midi based band...about 75% of the work we get is just my wife and myself..live guitar and some keys..the rest is all sequenced..been doing this since 1986 when the technology first came available and stable. We get $500 the two of us to play a wedding or private party and give them a lot of personality from the stage. Run a full 12 ft truss light system with plenty of motion, I use a programmable foot controller to change scenes on the lights while I'm playing and play all the solo and signature guitar parts, the rest is on midi. I run a pair of 3x15 siren cabs for my mains, and a pair of 2x15 bass cabs loaded with eminence long throw sub and bass speakers so we have a nice frame of matching black kustoms on each side of the stage..with only the 2 of us (or 3 w/our sax player) its nice to have the extra cabinetry around us, rather than a couple mackies on a stick deal. I also have gutted a couple of 200B heads and loaded horns and crossovers in them with matching grill clothe on the front and those sit on top of the 3x15 cabs giving a very nice look and adding extra throw and dispersion of the highs when I need them. I use mackie power, exlectronic crossovers and eqs and get very nice sound. I"ve been known to downsize the mains to our 4x10 columns or sometimes use them for side fill in a long room...it really does look good having all that matching black tuck n roll upthere.. I'd love a color PA, but the black is cool, for folks that might consider the color stuff tacky (and they are out there), the black goes basically unoticed...for folks that are paying attention, the black is very cool..and frankly, at 47 to still be doing weddings..I figure, I like to use em and fooey on what anyone else might think..but really we always get nice comments about our look and sound. the only thing about running all those 15s is you have to curve the snot out of the eq to back down the midrange blair at lower volumes, but when the night gets later and I get to crank em a bit I'm glad I've got every inch. Adding the colums helps attenuate the mids where the vocals lay..I know its a lot more gear to carry, but when you think about it, I'd have to haul a pair of mackies (no casters) and the stands, the set up the stands, and lift the mackies up on them and screw them down and provide power as well as the signal cable and I haven't even added the subs at this point..the kustoms come out of my trailer straight up, Deb can roll them in as easy as I can and I plug in the speaker cable and we're rockin... I think the old school still has it goin on! Kool endures.

Wow ET, very cool. My wife and I did the very same thing you are doing only my wife played Bass, We did that from mid 80's till 93, we quit cause my daughter was born, she just wouldn't sleep. We didn't do the Kustom thing but that makes it sound like fun. I loved playing music with my wife and I programmed (played) most of the stuff "Realtime". Do you use pre programmed music? I have to say that only one thing bothered me about it. When the "Milly Vannily" thing happened we heard "Hey there's Milly Vannily" a lot. Christ! we looked nothin like those guy's ;)Did you get that? I hated that but stuck with it as long as I could.

Thats a very cool PA ET. You and your wife have every right to be proud and loud. If I had another 3x15 cab I'd do it too. The 4x12 columns would give great mids too I'm sure. I use casters on my yamies to roll them around like you do.

Hey Brad, How 'bout some pictures of the band? My band is now all Kustom, except for the Carvin PA. Even the guitar player now has a Kustom k200 guitar. Also a gal playing in another band here uses a Kustom bass. How's that for south east Kansas??? Thrill Bill

You say you were running keyboards into a 200 head and 2x15 bottom. What speakers did the cab have in it. I am thinking about going thru mine on one channel just for monitoring purposes. I have two Eminence bass 15's I go thru the pa sys. The left channel I run my guitar thru it. Thanks

I run the keyboards of my group thru a Kustom (200) B series head and into and old Leslie. They sound great. I only have to run it on two to three and its plenty loud. Nice sound.

ok...for the dummy here...explain how you are running the leslie?..do you mean you are powering the leslie cab with the 200 head instead of the standard 122 amp?..and if so..how are you switching the rotor speed? As for the rest of ya'll.. I"m Proud to see all these players takin the tuck n roll out on stage.. 99% of the time I'm running nothing but kustoms on stage..now I do power my big 3x15 and 2x15 bass cabs with current amp technology....but the look is all kustom..and Igotta say...I"m not sure the new amps really sound any better than the old kustom 400s.. I can't seem to take much advantage of the extra wattage given the cabs and drivers to realize a significant db gain so perception wise..the old kustom amps kick just about as good...just can't fit those 400s in my 19inch racks!

Hi Et. I don't have a hammond organ. So there is no place for those two or more prong plugs to go from the Leslie amp. I have three smaller keyboards that do seperate hammond sounds and many other things besides those. The hammond organs sound great but it takes a lot of strong backs to move a B-3 around. I might get a XK2 one day though. So I took the amp out of the Leslie and added on some larger casters. That took a lot of weight out of it and its much easier to move around now. I wired the motors to a floor switch. The Kustom 200 head now powers it just like it would a speaker cab. I have used a Bassman to power it but there was too much distortion for the Keyboards. The Kustom is much louder even at lower settings and clean. I only run it on two now or nine oclock whichever you prefer to call that setting on a Kustom. I can't imagine having to run it pass three or ten oclock. Its that loud now. I have a Cts fifteen in the bottom of it so you might call it a Kustom Leslie. Great Keyboard setup.

yep...seen those..and there is an older version on ebay right now for about $150 instead of the $300 street price on the new model...but that assumes I've got a working leslie which I don't...I do have an extra 122 amp, but I have that as a spare hot swap for my 122 and 145 units should they get in trouble on a gig...since I've got a spare 45 cab..I like the idea of taking an old kustom 200 chasis and powering the motors with a seperate source...deinitely the way I want to go...thanks for the mental inspiration..my amp tech is coming up tommorrow for some work.. I'll put him to it...

Try it and you'll love it. The way to go once you've done it. It sounds like you have a real hammond though if you have that many Leslies and you have to have to have a spare amp. You'd need to get some sort of quarter inch plug coming out of that thing to the Kustom head first. Since I did'nt have a hammond to begin with then it was my only realistic option. If I had a hammond to begin with and the back to move I'd kept it stock. Many times though if you've got a real hammond then the band members know what it adds and are more than willing to help.

sorry.. I've not been clear.. I actually own a backline company (www.CarolinaBackline.com) our biz is to rent gear to touring groups ..national acts coming through our area.... so I do keep a real B3 in stock and am looking at picking up a second one as soon as funds allow..and I offer both a 122 leslie loaded with a JBLD130F and a 147 Leslie with an SRO for that organ...however, there are times when my customers either have a very difficult load, have budget constraints, or if my B3 should fail on a job, I need a backup solution..and that's why I keep a Korg BX-3 which is a dual manual synth version of a B3...draw bars and all..and I think its got a decent leslie sim on it, however I know from talking with serious B3 players that they'd be happier if the Korg, or any synth would have a real leslie cab connected to it and that's why I like the idea of creating a special leslie cab like you have that would allow me to plug any 1/4 inch synth into it..have the leslie powered by a kustom..not a real 122 amp, and allow them to stomp a footswitch for rotor speed..its just a great solution and I thank you for turning on the simple answer light bulb cause yeah, I was looking to spend the higher bucks for a converter and tie up a 122 power amp, that I really like to keep as a fast swap spare for the real B3 leslies...in fact, good example... I was doing a 3 day gig this past weekend and on the last day the band played an afternoon set, then was due to come back for a long night at 7...it was 2:00 and I got word from the production manager that my leslie had started to smell bad while it was just sitting idel.and he shut it down..fortunately it had lasted the prior band set...and I had plenty of time to make repairs or swap for a spare cab...but it turned out that the upper rotor motore had fried...and it was easier for me to swap out a spare motor than to get that cab out of a tight stage setup, out to the elevators and down to the truck on the loading dock...so I just did a field swap of the motor and had them up and running in about 10 minutes..and that's how my life goes these days...nuttin but fun! thanks again..have enjoyed this topic..sorry guys that we got off track from our kustoms..but I promise..there will be a K200 bass amp chasis going into this rig.. I have a couple spares that I had pulled from their housings.. I used the housings to load some horns in with crossovers and grill cloth on the front so they match the big kustom 3x15 siren PA cabs and 2x15 bass cabs that comprise my small club PA system...the amps have been shelved for years and deserve to be played..this will be a great application for the 200.. I'm excited...ET

I see it is time I got back in here! Most of the time the BIG PA we use is JBL. But, sometimes we are using a pair of BLUE 2x12+3x8 KUSTOM columns. We have a private party coming up April 10 that will call for the Kustom columns.....and since I have two pair of them I may take both for added support! There is also a possibility of using the charcoal 3x15 sirens! The hearse is in semi retirement as a Kustom hauler....but I still have it! We have so much gear now we are relying on a trailer and a van.....plus what ever guitars come in cars. I have a Kustom bass thanks to the love and caring of JC who found it for me.....but I only take it out on special occasions. We will try to do pics on the 10th. Just for the record, I am in my 5th year of Kustom collecting and playing music is more enjoyable than it has ever been. Much of it is the beauty and sound of the tuck and roll amps which get attention where ever we go. Thanks again Bud! BC

my amp tech was over today..we were doing some repairs on our number 2 B3 and one of my leslie cabs and I told him what I wanted to do with a little 145 leslie..he was all over it...thought it out and said he already knew how he wanted to build it so he's off on a mission and over the next couple weeks I'll strip the wood, restain it, we gotta load the power supply in the cab for the motors and it'll be set up for 1/4 inch input to the speaker so they can use any combo amp or amp head's speaker out to drive the cab and serve as the preamp for any of the keyboards...particularly the Korg BX-3 which will really add to that rig and allow me to rent that out as a viable B3 alternative..thanks again for spurring on the mental juices.. I could see my old Kustom 200 bass head smiling over on the shelf as I explained to Dave that this was to be the powerhouse for this new cool cab..that head hasn't seen action in many years and it is so ready to get back to work! ok guys.. I promise now I'm done talking organs..unless they are kustom organs..back on topic...ET

Speaking of Kustom organs, ET, think you'll have a chance any time soon to lift the lid on yours and check for a metal ID plate and/or paper tag? I'd love to have all the numbers off anything you find. Oh, re: the Leslie thing, I did want to mention that in my (admittedly rather limited) experience, you absolutely cannot achieve the classic Hammond "growl" without a tube amp to overdrive. I could be wrong, but I suspect that most serious Hammond players would frown heavily on pushing their tonewheels through solid-state. But the '200 will certainly be a lot louder than the standard Leslie amp! www.combo-organ.com

apologies for my forgetfullness.. I did tell you I would check on that..and I'll go out there in just a bit and pull the numbers off my kombo 1... I hear ya on the tube amp...I can always throw an old fender bassman head at it ...but there is some good growl coming out of the Korg synth on their voicings...don't want to overlook that aspect in the tone chain....more later...cause this is fun!

see..now I can get back around to a kustom issue...cause I chased the whole fender bassman for guitar issue in the 90s myself...and there is a sweet spot on a bassman..in fact its a one trick pony and it does it well...but I found that for my work as a variety band on a 4 hour gig.. I got more tonal possibilties and more smiles (subjective)... by running some nice quality pedals into a good kustom and so I went back to my kustoms for guitar darn near exclusively. I don't want to start the ol tube vs solid state argument here...really.. I do have a 65 showman that I adore and one of my marshalls does a great clean/bold thing that let's me apply some fx coloring and lord knows those amps can go places on their own that the kustom just isn't designed to do..its designed to play clean, transparent, bold and ya have to plug some other source into them, so its not a comparison..not meant to be, but I can imagine hitting a kustom with synth voices that already have some overdrive and dirt sampled into them will work well...it'll be fun and I"ll update on our findings once the cab is built..its a bit down my list cause we're gearing up hard for a very busy April/May, but hopefully we can get it built soon...I gotta get to work..enjoyed it boys! I'm looking forward to hearing a report on how you like the Kustom thru the Leslie. I like a Kustom for clean too and if you can run it loud enought here comes some nice grit on guitar. But its pretty loud. At least on my Kustoms anyway. My old leslie is ancient so the motors will just cut off. I've run piano thru it too. With the horn facing away from you when its off of course, LOL.. But the old thing sounds real good for the keys thru that old Kustom 200. The Bassman while a nice amp would distort too much at too a volume for me to be as useful as that Kustom is. Enjoy.

We will be doing a private party on the 10th. Our big PA will be on loan that night so we will be using blue Tuck and Roll columns. I will take pics if my old self can remember to bring the camera! Glad to see BRYNN on the board. This summer we will try to really load the stage with color for our outdoor gigs....but I can not match FLIPP'S number of 200 heads!! Welcome back Deb.BC

Flipp really are the champions of kustom performance these days...so much attitude...Kustom amps were the only possible choice to back that much spank on stage! Oh...btw: totally other end of the sonic spectrum, but have been working with the old DooWap group, Lil Anthony and the Imperials (Earth Angel, etc) providing backline gear for some events...anyway, they've asked me to build and lead the pickup band for their southeast concerts in April...money is scale plus a little more for my headaches..but the reason I'm mentioning this is that my original backline riders were calling for the standard fender twin reverb...but now that I'm on guitar I'm planning to take some tucknroll out there.. I'm leaning toward my pair of 2x10SC 100s..mainly cause they've both just been serviced and are dead quiet and so clean, but these are arena and outdoor festival main stages, so I could stretch out a bit to my larger rigs...and for all you sparkle fans I want you to know that I am considering pulling some color into play. I realize that these guys are mostly about the 50s so mykustoms are off by a decade...and as much as I enjoy my fender 59 bassmans and blues devilles, I just prefer my padded ponies.. we'll see....welcome Brynn... ya'll Play Loud! All right folks.....this is the big weekend for the upcoming outdoor gig. We have seven K200's with 3x15 cabinets and two more with 3x12s at Foxy's place undergoing speaker moves, performance checks and cleaning for the show. (we have no cascades Conrad...so run yours down if you have time) The problem is the extended forcast is giving a 40% chance of rain in Western Kentucky for Saturday night.....and that would mess up the picture opportunities for the ALL KUSTOM STAGE. If you will PRAY for favorable weather.....I will get the pics!BC

OH.... That would be KOOL. Unforunately, I have a wedding on Saturday and a Baptism on Sunday. Kentucky isn't that far away and I really don't need much of a reason to travel. If there are any upper midwest gigs in the future, keep us informed. That would be a real hoot. Thanks again. Conrad

Brad, good luck on the weather for this weekend. Seven 3x15 cabinets and a pair of 3x12's, that brings back memories of my younger years when we hauled seven of the 3x15's, two of the K400 heads and a pair of K200 heads along with the 412 kustom kombo organ. Our drummer met his match for volume. I'll keep my window open saturday night here in Michigan, so play loud. Don

Glad you got the no rain. We could use some cold days for May down here.
