I bought an old Kustom cabinet at a pawn shop recently. Black, roll and pleated with 3-10" Jensen speakers. I scoured the old lists to find out what system this went with. I can't find a listing for 3-10" speaker cabinets. Can someone identify this?

It is a 3 x 12 cabinet from about 1968-69. The speakers are mounted from the rear; the cutout which you can verify from the front is about 10 ½ “. The dimensions on a 3x12 are about 47 ¼ H x 25W x 12D

No kidding? They sure look like 10's to me. It was sold to me as 3-10's. Guess I got a pretty good deal for $100!! Thanks!

I measured the cabinet and those are pretty much the right dimensions. I still can't figure out what series it came from. The front plaque states "Kustom Electronics, Inc." NOT ROSS.

The 3x12 was generally sold with K200's.
Since it is not Ross, that would probably the same time period as a K200B.
The three basic Kustom tuck-and-roll time periods:

1) 1964 to May 1968 - Ross
..a) 1964 to approx May 1967 - Frankenstein (J595, C895, etc.)
..b) June 1967 to May 1968 - non-Frankenstein (2-15J2, K200A, etc.)

2) June 1968 to approx May 1971 - Kustom Electronics (plexi-faced amps - K100, K200B, etc.)
Includes approx June 1969 to May 1971 plexi combos (K25, K50, K100C-8, etc.)

3) June 1971 to approx Dec 1973 - Kustom Electronics (metal-faced amps - K150, K250, etc.)
Company now ran by the Baldwin Piano Company - Bud Ross had sold Kustom to them.
(K150 plexi combos and K100 and K200 plexi PA heads were still made in this time period)
..a) June 1971 to May 1972 plexi combos (K150)
..b) June 1972 to Dec 1973 metal-faced combos (Challenger, Hustler, Sidewinder, Commander, Charger)

I'd say if its as clean as it looks you did OK for a c-note. But, what's that head? We need to get you fixed up with a nice plexi!

OH! That head is a Penncrest! I just reworked it and added a new reverb tank. Nice old tube amp.

Penncrest. You nearly had me stumped with that one. Suspected it might be the J.C. Penney house brand and a little research confirms. I gotta say, I think this is the first one I ever saw. I remember Sear's Silvertone, and something or another that Montgomery Wards put out, but I can't say as I ever remember seeing anything at my local Penneys. Of course, that was a few years ago! Anyhow, good luck with what would seem to be a rare bird. Axeman

Minor point of interested: J.C Penney also imported a combo organ from Holland, the Philips Philicorda, and re-sold it under the Penncrest name. What I can't figure out, is why they chose the Philips, when Italian and Japanese combo's were just all over the place at the time. You can see it on the Philips page of my web site www.combo-organ.com

Oh, BTW..... The Penncrest amp was purchased to play my Magnus 3d Combo through! Had one of those puppies!! It was replaced a year later (thank God) with a black roll & pleated Kustom organ! Had that for about 5-6 years. Sad to see the Kustom go, but wasn't so sad about having to move it around to practices and gigs!
