Awesome K200B-1 New Speakers? [message #4093] Fri, 23 April 2004 23:21 KustomAddict Messages: 14 Registered: March 2004 Junior Member I recently purchased a K200B-1 head and it sounds awesome! I also have a K150 and I have been playing the K200 through its cabinet. I have built a new cabinet for the K200, but I was wondering what kind of 12" speakers are best for this amp if I want to play loud with a guitar. So I'm kinda looking for some mid-range good sounding speakers. Ya know, not some super bassy speakers for a bass guitar. BTW what do the peavey black widow speakers sound like. I saw the website saying it's super durable made with Kevlar and all that. But how does sound? Thanx Report message to a moderator

My favorite for guitar in kustoms has always been the old CTS speakers (code 137) and I'm too stupid to know if there is still a current production version of these..but I've always either found them in my rigs or bought some reconed from the local speaker recone shop...they are warm and full and can get as bold as the kustom amp can offer...I don't really know when and where they break up cause I'm probably hearing my amps go dirty before the speakers do..which is not the case with teh jensons which to me are more brittle and I don't care for them. If you want your kustom to stay clean and loud as possible and get your dirt from your pedals (my recommendations) then an old JBL D series is still the winner...very efficient so you'll get more from the amps..perhaps a bit more pronounced in the mid range... I can't speak for the black widows in the guitar 12s...some of us have tried those and other hi power speakers in the kustoms and with only 100watts rms, you just can't push those new design speakers hard enough to make the magic that they are made for these days. I have a couple very sweet guitar rigs that I want to upgrade drivers in and I will go for JBL D 10s and 12s when I can get them..plus that chrome cap shining through the grill is just the mack daddy to me... I do like the PV shefield series ok...probably my 2nd choice after a good ol CTS..but sure, try the black widows if you can get your hands on one cheap, or borrowed, or whatever...you may love em..you can always run a pair in the cab, add another speaker jack and stack 2 heads on top.it'd look cool, give you 200 watts rms and you'd be the baddest kid on your block. Also, I'm assuming you're running the little 2x12 K100 series?...or is this in a tall 3x12 cab..very different boxes..the little 2x12s are very bassy and its hard to get away from that...but the 3x12 cab...oh yeah..you can get much different tones based on the speakers in those and that cab will respond to the extra wattage at volume..ok .. I'm rambling...just cause I love talking tuck n roll...hey..whatever you do... Play Loud! ET Report message to a moderator

Is it 100W rms for each speaker since I have a K200 or should the power rating add to 100W rms (ie 50W for each speaker). Or should i get speakers with a little bit higher power rating for a little of a saftey factor(if so how much of a saftey factor?). I don't know all that much about how these speaker ratings work. For ex. i can see how a black widow speaker rated at 1000W rms would not sound good because it's made for a huge bass head. Besides after looking at some of the black widows i think it's made to accentuate the bass response which is not what i want. BTW i am playing my K200 through a K150 cab not K100. I think there's a diff.(not 100% sure though). Also are the JBL D series still in production? Any and all info. will be greatly appreciated. Thanx ET. When I took the back off I found Radio Shack 12s were loaded. I was amazed.....the amp sounded great for guitar and did a respectable job as a bass amp. The only other 12" speakers I have experienced for bass have been the CTS that were mentioned by ET and some later KEI (Kustom Electronics Inc) from a 150 series amp and they both work well. Senior Member The JBL D´s haven´t been produced for maybe 30 years. They use the same voice coil and cones as the E series, K series and the newer 22XX series speakers. The K´s are about the same as the D´s but the E´s and the 22XX´s use a much larger and heavier magnet structure. I use E140´s in my PA and push 4 of them with 1700 watts from a QSC 3402 amp. The ratings are 200 watts RMS each and if you can multiply, I am pushing over twice the power that they are rated for. JBL speakers also have a peak rating twice that of the RMS and because music is intermittant and not a continuous sound, such as white or pink noise, the speaker has a chance to cool between notes, phrases, songs, etc. The more you push through, such as full range PA use, the harder it is. But an individual instrument should never get close enough to bother any good quality speaker. If the speaker breaks up, it is probibly just worn out. The cones and surrounds get old and fatigued. Look on ebay for a blown speaker. You can get a basket for 25 to 50 and have it reconed. I will cost about $140 to recone a 12" or 15" but you will have a brand new speaker to play on. Remember, without the speakers, there is no sound!!! Conrad Report message to a moderator

[message #4135 is a reply to message #4093] Wed, 28 April 2004 07:51   stevem Messages: 4733 Registered: June 2004 Location: NY Senior Member The other day I heard one of the new eminence red coat series 12 inchers, called the red fang model.It sounded amazing!!! with every nuch the same complex mids of the 300 dollar celestion model. The fang is a 30 watt alnico model with a DB rating of 103, thats more than the celestion, and cost 130 bucks from parts express.And I would not worry about 2 of them only handling 60 watts, you would have to run your 200 past the half way mark to start to tax them, and you are real loud then.
