I'm in a bit of a pinch, and I hope someone who knows more about this stuff than I do can help me out.

My main rig is getting repaired, and I have a show this Wednesday that I don't have an amp for. Here's what I can scrape together; I have an old Kustom Challenger which I believe is a puny 25W. I have a friend who has a Kustom 3x12 cab, but he doesn't have a head. Can I use the Challenger to run the 3x12? Or would that just be pointless?

Also, here's a pic of the speakers...

Are these bass speakers? The info I've found online thus far seems to indicate that they are, but I'm not too sure (not being an expert on these things). If so, would they still be effective with a guitar, or would the sound be ridiculous?

Also, my friend is looking to unload this cab and says I can have it for $150. Is that a worthwhile price?

Thanks in advance, and sorry about the long first post... Wink

Hi. If the small amp has a headphone or a tape or line out jack, borrow or rent a power amp of 150 to 300 watts. feed the small amp into the power amp, and run one channel to drive the kustom, or if the power amp can run bridged do that to drive the kustom. Yes, that is a bass loaded 3-15 cab, and yes its worth 150 bucks.

I have what looks to be the same cabinet with 3-12's.
Jensen speakers.

I'm using a Yamaha G100II head.
It sounds fantastic!

Burd,

Send me a note if you ever decide you don't want that cabinet anymore? Though, I'm sure you will probably keep it a long time and it will give you many years of pure Kustom jammin'loud action. Rock On...

Thanks for the advice guys. I went ahead and got the cab. One of the speakers is blown, but luckily I have a replacement for it (as long as it is a 3x12 anyway). It sounds very good even with just the two speakers working, and I am amazed at the condition of the exterior. Because of the blown speaker, I gave the guy $120 for it, and I really think I got a good deal.

Right now I'm running it with a 90W Dean Markley amp until I can find a good tuck and roll style Kustom head to use. Anyone have any suggestions for a K head that would work best with this cab for guitar?

Hey, for my money the metal face 150s and 250s are the best, not only circuit wise, but tone wise also. If you jump the 2 channels together you have far more tone shapping to work with than any prevous model kustom. And if you have a guitar model head ,the reverb has a tone control on it too. Any one who owns one of these heads should slip it out of the cab, and remove the metal top cover and leave it off so the head dump output heat better. And they are made to drive a 4 ohm load.

P.S.Their was a change in these models in 72, where by they put in more gain into the preamp. Its a simple mod that is great for guitar by may not be needed for bass(not for active pickups) If any one needs a copy of the mod let me know.

The challenger is a loud 25 watts and used a 8 ohm speaker. Perfect for stage and you can mike it if needed. I still gig all the time using a K50 single 12 Jensen which would be to older model of the challenger. I never have to run the K50 over a 9 o'clock position for volume. Big clubs I toss a Shure SM57 in front of it and let the PA do the work. Last weekend was the first time I dragged my charcoal 3x12 jensen cabinet to a gig and used a K100-5 PA head to drive it. Sounds great. I use a digitech processor pedal in front of the amp. The cabinet you have pictured is a 3x12 not a 3x15 cabinet. As far as a bass or guitar cabinet the speaker jack plate should state Jensen or CTS. The jensen was for guitar work. Each speaker is 16 ohms and wired in parallel and has a total impedance of 5.6 ohms. The CTS version is the same, 16 ohms each speaker and wired in parallel. I would pull the back off to make sure what kind of speakers are now in the cabinet. It may be a simple fix to get the non working speaker going again. Maybe a wire has came off. Using the 3x12 cabinet with just two speakers would give a 8 ohm load to the challenger. Just unplug the internal speaker and connect the 3x12 cabinet to the amps output jack. You never know what has been deposited in the cabinet via the port holes. I have found broken long neck beer bottles, toys to french fries.
A quick note to all, the tuck and roll of kustoms are 2" each.
Looking at a picture you count the T&R of a cabinet, it will give you the dimensions of the cabinet, and you can always look at the pictures in the literature section of this site to verify what cabinet you have.
