I just bought waht was supposed to be a 2-15 cab yesterday but it looks like a folded horn? And it distorts like crazy with my Peavey firebass 700 driving it. Wondering if the speaker is gone or going and what it actually is ? Any help would be appreciated.
Hello. Does it have any brand name markings on the speaker cabinet? What are the numbers on the speaker frames? Does a Firebass put out 700 watts? If it does, that's probably too much wattage for the speakers. The cabinet could also perhaps be the wrong impedance for the amp, or maybe the speakers are in fact blown. I've never seen a 2x15 folded horn cabinet myself before, once a 2x12, but that cabinet must be a giant if it is a folded horn cab. I am borrowing a pair of Altec-style home built cabs from a friend that are 1x15 and they are the same height as my Kustom 2x15 cabs, except about half a foot deeper, and they must weigh at least 100 pounds each. Do you have a picture of it? If you do, using a photo host such as photobucket.com and put the url in here. Good luck!

This cab is a Kustom And it is huge over 5 feet tall as wide as a 1-25 cab but I can't see any speakers inside but it does make sound just distorted. Yes the firebass is 700 watts but only with a 2 ohm load and I don't think that is the case. It just sounded like something was being overdriven not like coil rub or anything. And the gain and volume were way down Like 10 Oclock on the vol and 9 on the gain. But I still have no Idea what it is. Kustom definately. and there is no Id plate or anything to get numbers from. It is tall deep and heavy. That is all I know . Does this help Identify it?
Hey Nighttrain 1127,
If you play bass you have bought the right cabinet.
I think you have a Kustom 1-18B.
The speaker is probably damaged and needs to be replaced.
Before you buy a new speaker, first you should flip the mounting of the speaker and see if the distortion improves. You can do this without actually opening the cabinet by just using the cabinet upside down. (I am assuming that the speaker does not face downward in the cabinet.) Gravity can make large speaker cones droop over time, so rotation of the mounting is a good idea. The speaker probably is damaged, but this is still worth a shot.
(Somebody please step in if I get anything wrong here)
The 1-18B is a folded horn enclosure with an 18 speaker.
It was made in 1972 to 1973.
It was normally used with the K250-1 bass amp.
The rated impedance of the speaker was 3.2 ohms.
The dimensions I believe are 51 H x 25 W x 18.5 D
If you ever wondered why K250 amps were rated as 3-4 ohms for the minimum impedance, the reason is probably due to this 3.2 ohm cabinet (and the 2.7 ohm 3x15 cabinet).
Plush also made one of these 18 folded horn cabinets theirs was I believe 48H x 30W x 20D
