I just opened up a couple of my Kustom 2x15 cabs and they have KEI speakers in them. I have not seen any other posts on here regarding them. Are they rare? Are they good for Bass? They appear to be just like the CTS in one of my other 2x15 cabs. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hello. I believe that those speakers were in fact made by CTS from what I have heard before, but I am not 100% sure on that. The best way (in my opinon) to see if they are good for bass is to try them out for bass. I've found a good way to determine that, as I found when comparing my Jensen loaded 2x15 vs. a CTS 2x15, was to hook both of them up to a K200 head, turn the bass up almost full with the volume at a reasonable level with a bass plugged in, play a low E and put your hand by or in the port hole. If you feel air being pushed out, then the speakers most likely have a frequency response low enough to handle bass on a regular basis. If not, then they are probably guitar speakers (though they may still sound good for bass; my Jensens sound almost identical to the CTS, but with not as low of a response). Anyway, if they sound bad for your tastes, look for some CTS, JBL, or Altec 16 ohm 15" speakers if you want to retain the original Kustom vibe, or if you usually only use one cab or have a head that plays down to 2 ohms, load them up with 8 ohm speakers (4 ohm in each cab when paralleled, 2 ohms with two cabs). I personally prefer the sound of older bass speakers, but new ones are designed to handle a lot more power, so I'd base it off of what kind of power your amp produces. Good luck!
