Hi Steve: K200 Caps & Bridge Rectifier May Not Fit... [message #3824] Sun, 07 March 2004 22:06 Go to next message

Has anyone noticed that Mouser 539-CGS50V25000 Caps are too tall and hit Reverb Unit on K200B-2? (OK for K200B-1 though) Also, the blade connectors on Mouser 583-MP251 Rectifier Bridge are wider type and thus you need to cut off & replace the four wire connectors to use it. Did I order the wrong components?

Sorry I did not realize I was judging the space in one of my bass heads without the reverb pan.

Hello. I never ended up getting new caps in my K200-A5. I wouldn't know what to look for in replacements, but the amp tech that worked on mine left the amp on for 12 hours or so to charge the caps and said it worked. Good luck!

The original mallory caps had kind of a 1/4" imbossed circle in their top. If they are not swelled out than your caps are OK!

Thanks Steve, Cool I opened up the K200B5 last night and the Caps are Mallory 235-6907A, 500 MFD 50VDC, (Size: D= 2.5 X H=3.0) and have no bulging after these 36 years (AMPs B/Day is this Month 1969). The screws on top are slighly rusted but I've kept the Amp inside cleaned and have replaced only a few old wires and connectors. Could not get a cross on this PN at Mouser or Parts Express. I would assume that the correct Cap to get would be either the 539CGS50V18000 (2 X 3.12) or the 56000 (3 X 3.02) so they will fit under the Reverb tank?

I also finally opened up my 1974 K-1B Bass Amp SN: 112390 (25 RMS)and blew out the dust and checked the Caps they are marked as: Illinois +40 WVDC 85 Degree C/ 4.74 Size = 1 X 3. Amp powers up the pots are a little scratchy but that will get taken care of soon. Plugged Strat into it going to a single 1971 12" CTS cab with no pedals and it sounded great but has some hiss but I think some of that will disappear when I change out the power cord to a 3 pronger. Shocked This is a pretty powerful 25 Watts Berber. Twisted Evil Will test it with My Monster JBL later.
V3 would be proud.

True replacements for the mallory caps are the computor grade caps from mouser, although you will still have to check size. Going from the stock 4500MFD to 8000 to 10000MFD is plenty, any more makes no difference for bass.As for your other amp grounding will not change hiss/white noise levels since that noise comes from gain and is more up front with bright boost or the treable up high.

I had the same problem in a K100 with reverb. I just used different straps and layed them down rather than standing up. Worked just fine. The newer and larger caps were taller and smaller diameter. The leads may have to be lengthened but so what? Just order the wrap around straps and you are good to go.
