Kustoms at work... [message #754] Sun, 08 July 2001 09:41   RoyC Messages: 97 Registered: April 2000 Location: East Central Illinois Member Last night we played at an outdoor party way out in the boonies nestled among the corn and bean fields in east central Illinois. It was hot during set-up in the late p.m. But once sundown came and we took the stage, a nice little breeze cooled things off as we played to mostly locals under a full moon. As despicable as Illinois winters are, sometimes the summertime makes it worth it..... The bass player played through my K500, with a cab on each side of the stage. My keyboard was hooked up to a pretty blue K100. I played a LP a/b'd to a black K250SC and a blue K100 1x15 (with Fender Reverb hooked up to it) on the 'a' side, and a blackface Twin Reverb and a Deluxe Reverb (both reissues) on the 'b' side. I normally run a FullDrive 2 and a Line6 Delay modeller, among other stuff. Man, everything was working, the music was just right, the fans were right there in front of the stage. We'll never be famous, but, there for a brief evening, we had 'em in our hands, and could do no wrong. *sigh* This post has no purpose, either, but I'm still on my adrenaline overdrive, and wanted to share the moment. Just before I " retired " from playing in a band, our harmonica player said to me during one particularly good session that " we were on our way ". I told him that it was my humble opinion that we'd really know we'd made it when while playing, the ladies in the audience would start throwing they're underwear at us. I always like to hear about the amps that are still "out there" and doing what they do best! I will testify as to the tone of your 500 bass rig.......it is one of the best sounding amps I have ever heard or played through...I am still working on getting that tone from a 200 rig! My band played last night.....but I had to switch from my red 3x15 to a black 100 2x12 CTS rig as we were in a small club.....still it is tuck and roll and definitely sounds Kustom. I was turned down to the point that the volume was just on and still the club owner complained about "TOO LOUD" I will not get started on that one! Last week my ragged blue PA saw duty in a coffee shop with a friend doing an acoustic gig.....be proud BUD! How about a few words from the others that are out playing????? We've been playing the fairs and festivals again this year and I use a red 200 with 215 and/or 315 for bass. We also have a cascade 200/215 stage left, and a silver 200/215 stage right for back-lining cheesy combo organs. It's a great look and a great sound that gets a lot of attention. On July 28 we're playing with 1960's old timers 'Paul Revere and the Raiders', and I've been told they pack a few Kustoms in the bus themselves these days, so it should be a tuck n roll good time! I'm jealous! We played a local tavern last night. Nine to midnight. Decent sized crowd - not huge. (a small tavern). The P.A. we played through was my black K200 with 2 columns. Everything went through the p.a. except the black K250 bass rig. The sound-man lavished praise on the p.a., implying he should sell his 5000 watt rig and get a Kustom. (But then he lamented that me and my Kustom krazy friends probably already own all of them ; p ) 'Played keyboard through the blue K100 2x12. I played through a black K250SC 2x12 and a R.I Twin Reverb for the rhythm, and a K250SC 2x10 and a BF Princeton for the lead work (the Princeton was dimed out all night). All of it mic'd. The frontman/rhythm player played through a SF Twin Reverb and a Princeton Chorus. We recieved many compliments on our sound and our song selections. We play a lot of Zeppelin (6 on the set list), we play a 12 min. version of the Allman Bros live version of "Whipping Post" that morphs into "Jessica", then morphs back into "whipping Post" (I love playin' it), a 10 minute version of Pink Floyd's "Happiest Days of Our Lives - The Wall pt.1 - The Wall pt.2. We did a kickin' rendition of "Sultans of Swing". Man, I could'a played all night. The crowd wouldn't let us quit at midnite, the bar owner allowed us to do 1 more (we did Zeppelin's "I'm Gonna Crawl"). Following that the crowd wanted 1 more, the owner said no. After we shut down, 3 people from semi-local clubs (good ones, too) introduced themselves to us and expressed intensive interest in our band. Aaahhh! Life is good! In late 69 ( yeah, I'm gettin old ) my " garage " band opened for the Shadow's Of Knight at Valley View in Frankfort Il. SOK did a cover of Them's Gloria that was a hit for a bit on Chicago radio in 68 I believe. I think that qualafied as my " 15 minutes of fame ", eh ? Report message to a moderator

Another festival...I planned on using twin 100 cabinets and a 200 head.....but some of the gear did not get delivered so I was down to my.....don't tell ET......black 100 2x12 CTS rig! The little fellow did a great job.....but I just wanted to get more thump behindme on an outdoor gig. [message #791 is a reply to message #754] Mon, 30 July 2001 09:52 Anonymous braggin rights in order...played a nice arena gig this past weekend..Sat and Sun both...good crowd...not a sell out, but probably in the 8,000 range...black leather jacket and cool shoes time trying to make this old fart look younger or somehow more hip...but without a doubt the best part about the look of this geetar player was the gleeming black 3x12 rig standing behind me...it was great to finally take that amp out, having only acquired it this past year, and throttle it up...you never really know how an amp is gonna throw on a big stage like that...just can't tell with it sitting inthe house...but it really played well..in fact the sound guy came up at one point beggin for mercy cause I was throwing back to him and you know how sound guys are about keeping your amp sound on stage and letting their house system do the talking...would have liked to taken more cabs out, but the load in just didn't lend itself too well for that...as it is, all the sponsored amps on the back line were combos..they had a pair of Line 6 2x12s waiting for me...so my big towering monster really stood out... I probably shoulda taken the pair of 2x12 SC combos...that would have been more consistent...but I'll tell ya...it was great to have a big rig up there with me...proud as always of my kustoms...and playin loud....ET! Rain had been threatening, so we all sat on the stage and drank beer, with no equipment unloaded, waiting for the owner of the property to signal the 'all clear' after consulting the radar on the Weather Channel on his TV. Following that, we (and another local band) unloaded and set up. (2 bands setting up on the same stage simultaneously made things a little more hectic than they needed to be). The other band played first for about 40-50 minutes, then we took the stage. It seems like we don't get really cookin' until our 2nd set, and last night was no exception. But from then on, we had the crowd standing right there in front of the stage, and we stayed with it so they didn't drift away. I think the 2nd set started with Pink Floyd's "The Wall", "Happiest Days of Our Lives", "Wall" Pt.2 medley (about 12 minutes plus). followed by STP's "Crackerman", Allman's "Midnight Rider", a couple of our originals, a blistering version of Whipping Post-Jessica-Whipping Post"., etc. It started just barely sprinkling, so we ended it with a butt-kickin' version of The Doors "L.A.Woman". We kept 'em there in front of the stage. The bassman played out of my Kustom 500, with one cab on each side of the stage. I had the keys hooked up to the blue K100 stack, and my LP was a/b'd to the K150SC and a Twin Reverb R.I.. The frontman had his Telecaster hooked up to a SF Twin and a Princeton Chorus. It was a good lookin' stage set-up. Not too big a crowd, just locals made up of workin' people, mostly, ages 19 to 80. But everybody (especially us) had a real good time. Labor Day we will be about 5 miles from there at a well-groomed woods with a permanent covered stage. It's kinda the last outdoor summertime gig, but always well-attended, and always a good time.
