Hi guys,
Another 1st timer here looking to buy my first Kustom after drooling over them for years. I'm a bass player (Fender jazz) with two possibilities around here:
Option 1. K150-6 combo amp. White tuck-n-roll with what looks like a 12in(?) speaker. If I understand right, 75w per channel. other postings have answered my questions on is it normal to distort at low volume settings. I thought this might make a nice practice amp. Doesn't sound like it will work for even the small dives we play.
My questions:
a) what ohms would the single speaker be?
b) "monitor" plug on back - Does that mean I can plug another amp into it and use it like a speaker cabinet or does that mean I can send the amp signal out to an external speaker cab?
Option 2. K200B - Black tuck-n-roll, but not selling with a cabinet. I belive it needs a minimum 4ohm speaker cab.
Questions:
a) Does that mean I can use it with my SWR Triad rated at 4 ohms until I find a Kustom cab?
b) Do many people sell the cabs without the head, or am I most likely going to end up with two heads and one cabinet in the end?
Which would you start with? Any feedback would be great. Thanks for maintainting a very useful web site.
The K150-6 has a 15 inch speaker. It is hard to say on the ohms as Kustom used both 16 ohms and 8 ohms on the 1x15 combos.
Most were 16 ohms though.
The monitor output is to be connected to another power amp.
The K200 will work fine with your cabinet – it works well at 4 ohms.
You should be able to find a Kustom cabinet with no trouble.
Since you are accustomed to the Triad, you might not be happy with the combo – it will have less deep bass response than your Triad, as the internal cabinet volume is less.
I would get the K200 head and later get a Kustom 2x15 cabinet.
Keep in mind the key thing is how loud you play and what you are used to – a lot of bass players use 2.5 cu. ft. cabinets and would love the bass sound of the K150-6.

internal speaker enclosure volumes:
K150-6 1-15SC ............3.1 cubic feet
Kustom 2x12 cabinet......3.5 cu.ft.
SWR Triad cabinet ........5.0 cu.ft.
Kustom 2x15 cabinet .... 5.7 cu.ft.

Welcome T-Bone! Another bass player here. I play 4001 Rics and Fender Jazz. I have played bass for 30+ years and I have said on this board multiple times that if I could only own ONE amp it would be a K200 with a 2x15 CTS cabinet. Good volume and tone for any venue and still small enough to haul in the back seat of a sedan. During the last 7 years I have owned 50+ Kustom amps of various color and speaker configurations and I still come to the same conclusion. Lots of other great sounding Kustoms out there but the 2x15 is the best all around in my opinion! BC

Guys,
Thanks for all your advice. It is a great help. Seems the K200 would be a good starting point. I'll let you know how it works out. Steve - If the head works out, I'll shoot you an email and possibly come down to check out the cabinet.

Hi Guys,
I am now the proud owner of a K200B-2 amp head. I used it in a band practice last night and loved it. The whole band loved it, too. The head works great with my SWR Triad cab. Hopefully I'll get a matching Kustom cab some day.
Thanks for your resonses. It really helped decide which way to go.

I have a k200 kustom with 2-15's and have been using Kustoms for years. I now use a Yamaha preamp I purchased new in the mid to late 70's and love the added color I can mix into my Kustom, the preamp is also bi-amp capable with other nice features. I use to have a blonde neck, black Jazz in the seventies which I wish I kept. I would never get rid of my Kustoms!
