Hello everyone..it's nice to be here. My name's daf and I was lucky enough to come across a Kustom III Mixer/PA in a local music shop for a price I couldn't pass up. The only thing wrong with the gear (other than normal wear and tear) is that one of the horn drivers is damaged.

http://dafremen.googlepages.com/kustomiiipa.jpg

I cracked open the cab and opened up the driver to find the problem. A tiny little scratch on the coil not more than 3 mm long!

Now I'm trying to figure out how to proceed. Do I pay a speaker tech to rebuild the coil? OR are there other horn drivers out there that will fit and provide similar performance? Are there folks that keep OEM replacements in stock and how much might they run?

Unfortunately, since I can't find the specs for this part, I don't even know where to begin looking for a replacement. The only identifying marking on the driver says: "Kustom 743"

Anyone know anything about this driver? Impedance, power rating, frequency range and response..etc?

Any information would really help me get these beauties back on stage where they belong.

Thanks in advance for the help.

daf

If your driver has fins around it, it is a ElectroVoice driver model 1823 and you should be able to contact EV and get a replacement driver. And how do you post photo's on this site? I've never been able to figure that one out.

Thanks for the reply. Before checking in here, I managed to find a driver on Ebay that looked like mine which was listed as an 1823M (square fins).

I'm assuming that this is the 1823M and not the 1823 (Which is High Range right?) Would that be a correct assumption? If so then it looks like I could pick up an 89521B replacement diaphragm for about $50 and be in business!

Again any help in positively identifying the part # would be helpful if I've guess incorrectly.

As for adding an image:

Just below the smilies, you'll see a globe with what appears to be a chain link or a paperclip. Two icons to the right of the globe, there's what looks to be a canvas with a picture and a paintbrush. Click on that icon and enter the URL of your photo.

Thanks again for the help.

I am not sure, but I think the diaphragm for a 1828 model driver is the same, at any rate if oyu go to the loud speaker plus site they have pictures and you can match it up.If this does not work out I would call orange county speakers, or simply speakers with you 1823 model number and I would bet they have a new diaphragm for you.
If they have a choise on frequency you do not need anything that goes over 15k.

Thanks steve and everyone for the help.

I tracked down the part here:

http://www.speakerrepair.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=P ROD&Product_Code=10-160&Category_Code=

On another note, I noticed that one of the woofers had a small hole in it and was unplugged. Repairing the hole, I plugged it back in, only to find that it did not work. (This is turning into a project. Surprised )

The speakers are marked 8 - 16 ohm, are 12 inch and I have no idea what their max power rating is. Each woofer is marked with what appears to be a part number: 038-0079-00 OR 2857748 (Not sure which is the actual part number.)

Not sure what's wrong with it either..maybe the coil on this one was also damaged, perhaps it burned out...who knows?

Anyhow I'll need to replace it, but would like to know the specs before I go shopping for its stunt double. Very Happy

If anyone has a clue as to the make of these things it would be helpful..even a power handling stat would be more than helpful.

Man I love this thing. The more I research it, the more I realize that even with the parts I'll be buying, I found a minor treasure in that music shop.

There are two ways to sort this, you can use or get a ohm meter and check out what the other good drivers check out at. A reading of less than 8 ohms, but not less than 4 ohms would be a 8 ohm driver.
A reading of over 8 ohms would be a 16 ohm driver.
These cabinets are 8 ohms so if you do not have a meter you can tell what impeadance the driver are by how they are wired.
If they are wired in parallel they would be 16 ohm driver, if wired in serise they would be 8 ohm drivers.
These are Eminence made drivers.
You could send that out and get it reconed for about 65 bucks, or get a new one for 10 or 15 dollors more.
