Very thankful to the poster in LA who took care of my handle problem completely. Now, I have a problem that is not really a problem....yet. Any suggestions on what type of speaker to put in a 1970 Kustom K100 Bass Cabinet? Speaker is the original 15" and is working fine right now, but it is 43 years old, and eventually has to blow. Any ideas on what to buy and have on hand when that day comes and I have to replace it?

You should remove the back just to make sure what you have for a speaker in the cabinet. The standard speaker could be one of several brands, Jensen, CTS, JBL or Altec. Kustom offered the K100 head in two versions. The single channel K100-2 amp with reverb and vibrato, and the two channel K100-1 Bright/Normal channel head. The two channel K100-1 head was sold as both guitar and bass amps depending on what cabinet and speaker(s) in the cabinet. Unless you've owned the system since it was new, even the jackplate on the back may not match what you have for a speaker.

It's the K100 with the bright side and the low side head unit. I guess I'll get up the nerve to dig into it this weekend to see what kind of speaker is in there.
Thanks,

It is probably a 16 ohm driver as that is what I found when I changed my old 15" CTS driver out for an 8 ohm Altec 421A. Pleat answered a question about the 16 ohm CTS and said Kustom commonly put them in the 1-15 100's and combos as they bought huge quantities of the 16 ohm drivers for the 2-15 and 3-15 cabinets they made. The 100 head and combos were 8 ohm amps and so any 8 ohm 15 should work depending on your musical tastes. With the 8 ohm drivers you would get a bit more headroom with the more exact impedance match and get MORE power out. A K100 would deliver around 50 watts RMS with the 8 ohm match versus the 30-35 RMS with the 16 ohm driver. As far as the speaker wearing out ...I use my Kustom amps out live and don't concern myself with blowing a speaker...I'm 58 and I've Never blown one in the many years of playing live...though I suppose it could happen. I take care of my equipment. Sounds like you have the nice K100 bass head.. I have 2 of em' 1 Blue and 1 Charcoal. They sound really nice with the K200 2-15 bass bin as the impedance matches perfectly. Very Happy

If you have or can get a loan from a friend a machanics type telescoping mirror you can slip it in one of the ports to look at the rear of the speaker. If it has a square magnet, than its the orignal CTS brand driver.
