I see that the original speaker is an 8 ohm, but this amp has a jack for an ext. speaker. Can I run a 4 ohm speaker as the onboard speaker, if I don't connect an extension cab?

You can , but you run the risk of blowing up the amps output stage depending on how loud you play the amp and along those same lines the amp will only output near one half of the wattage it did with a 8 ohm speaker load!
In short it's a lose lose situation, but if your just playing at home by yourself at low volume you will be ok.
The speaker output jacks on the amp are in parallel
Your fully safe with a 16 ohm load, but once again you will only have near one half the output power.
