Kustom 200A Amp [message #3668] Sun, 08 February 2004 17:19 Go to next message

Checked one out at a used music dealer. When you turned the volume control up about half way you got a real high pitched squeal.IF you played the guitar there would be no sound. If you turn volume back down enough to stop the squeal it played alright. Anyone have any ideas what might cause this..Thanks

I've seen this before in Kustom and other amps. A component in the amp has drifted out of spec, or something has changed to the point that it will oscillate at certain settings of the controls. When the amp is in this state, it will no longer pass a signal, and can sometimes lead to a major failure of the entire amp. In some cases the oscillation will not be strong enough or of a frequency that can be heard in the output of the amp, but it will cause distortion, loss of power, or other symptoms to appear. Hi. This is not a hard problem for a tech to trace down. You should be able to pick the amp up for a song with a problem and then get it repaired.
